There are diverse reasons why people and governments support war or violence. For instance, supporting the military to engage in war is often defended on the ground that they are fighting for the right cause. The engagement of the American military in overseas war, for example, is defended on the premise that they protect the freedom, not only of the American people, but also of citizens in other countries. When the Iraq government headed by Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, the US government intervened because it was the right thing to do. While engaging in war is costly and destructive, there are instances when it should be supported in order to maintain peace and order. Moreover, oppressive acts of other rulers towards the weaker states should not be tolerated, thus war should still be supported. Sometimes, supporting war proved to have its long term advantages despite it often leads to immediate and devastating results.
On the other hand, there is the general concept that war and violence are not justifiable in any instance. Many organizations suggested that there is always a way to peacefully settle disagreements without the need tor resort to chaos. One of the most common reason not to support war is because killing is outright immoral, in addition to the fact that war can possibly cause destruction to civilians who would not otherwise engage in the conflict. Moreover, wars are costly and the resources can otherwise be used in other worthy causes. Other valid reasons to oppose wars are that they are destructive, especially when the conflict escalates to a long and wide ranging war. For instance, the use of powerful weapons may lead to a large number of deaths as well as an irreparable destruction of the environment.
