Honorable Ryan Anderson:
As the coordinator of the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for the civic and religion society at the Heritage Foundation in Washington and around the nation, I am writing to express my strongest concern over the newly proposed sexual orientation laws. The laws have been coupled with redefined acts of marriage and same-sex unions that are being designed to attack the freedom of faith-based organizations and private agencies in advocating for increased children adoption.
I am an adopted child who was connected with my family through a private agency and supporting the proposed laws will rob chances of thousands of foster children like me from getting their dream permanent families.
The number of children in the foster care homes remains high, and thousands of children continue to funnel in the system still unsure whether they will get a chance of getting a permanent home. The currently proposed policies only seek to violate the religious liberty of the private and faith-based agencies. In putting the welfare of children under foster care first, there should be advocacy of policies that seek to increase the likelihood of a child being adopted rather than reducing them.
Protecting the diversity of the private agencies as well as their ability to operate according to their values increases the like hood that a greater number of these children will be connected with loving, permanent homes. As, long as these entities meet the necessary requirements of protecting the children’s welfare, they should be left to freely operate according to their informed religious beliefs about marriage.
I urge you not to support or vote for the new proposed policies. The freedom and religious liberty of these organizations need to be protected. If there is any way I could be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. I thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
