POST 1
As a vegetarian, Lieu does run higher risks of lacking essential minerals during her pregnancy, but so do other pregnant women who do not follow the advice of their doctors. Women who lack essential nutrients due to malnutrition run a similar risk of having pregnancy complications and doctors prescribe prenatal vitamins. Although there are many reasons for an unhealthy pregnancy, unless it is pure neglect on behalf of the mother, the resources exist to address the nutrition needs under most circumstances.
As stated in the discussion, vitamin B12, iron, and omega 3 are the critical nutrients that vegetarians lack, but in Lieu’s specific case, we can see that she does consume fish and eggs on re gular basis. Although it is ultimately up to her doctor, the amount of her nutrient intake can be adjusted according to the baby’s needs during the pregnancy. There are a few things that we know about women consuming fish during pregnancy that can lead to other complications, so Lieu may need to supplement some of her consumed organic foods with supplements, or make slight shifts in her diet, but no major milestones that can’t be cleared to ensure the health of her baby.
Provided that there is no discussion addressing this issue, I feel it is important to make mention that Lieu should be particularly careful of the quality of foods she ingests, not only for her own sake, but for the sake of her unborn child. Genetically modified foods have been the source of many health problems and childbirth problems since their inception into the global marketplace. These genetically modified foods can have a profound effect on the health of Lieu and the development of her baby, so it would be best to purchase any foods or supplements with caution, as many doctors today are prescribing as the best prenatal care.
POST 2
Fluoridated drinking water will always be a topic of heated debate and that is because water is the essential nutrient of life. As the climate changes, both environmentally and economically, the world is placing more and more value on a glass of water. Large corporations are buying springs for the sole purpose of reselling bottled water and a lot of these companies have exclusive water rights to reservoirs in some of our towns and cities. It is understandable why people have such a problem with the tampering of our drinking water, whether it is beneficial or not.
Although the rate of fluoridated water is below the allowable threshold in New York State, it doesn’t mean that adding fluoride does not yield negative effects on the health of people. Often times, these additives have not undergone research over a sustained period of time adequate enough to draw solid conclusion on overall health. In this case, the establishment of additives in the drinking water has been practiced for quite a long time, but I think what concerns people more about the addition of fluoride and its direct effects, rather the concern lies in the question “What is the fluoride covering up?” People want to know why certain practices are being carried out and with the national hype of water quality at an all-time high, it is only fair to deliver the people what they want.
Not only do people want to know how much fluoride is added, but they want to know if the fluoride added is natural, genetically modified, synthetic or otherwise. They want to see the research that proves fluoride does not have ANY negative health effects. And, people want to see the “before” results so they are aware of the problems (if any) that exist in their water supply.
