“Jeopardy” was IBM project where they created a machine with human intelligence for answering questions called Watson. The quest to have a machine that can bear human intelligence has been criticized based on its weakness. Watson is an intelligent machine, to be precise an IBM computer that was designed to have human intelligence. However, through blogs and opinion pages experts pointed out that Watson does know anything. They have pointed out shortcomings such as the machine cannot laugh or talk with people or any other object. The limitations in the lack of self sense have also been pointed out. They have said that the machine cannot be equated to human beings. To be able to create an intelligent computer which has the capability of humans, then we need to have a large machine that can fill a whole room. If we only focus on the limitations of Watson, then the main purpose is lost. The technological advancement that were realized from Watson will then the lost and people will put them aside. The machines for questions and answers will soon be a reality in our offices and laboratories where they will help humans on how they think. Watson is a force that cannot be ignored.
Computers should not be equated to humans but be treated as very powerful tools and that they can successfully take up jobs currently done by humans. The focus on intelligence is no longer necessary because intelligence of machines maters little. The most important thing to consider is if they can deliver information or results.
The impact of tools that we make in our history has been accepted and many have adjusted to those impacts. A barometer is an example of a tool that performs the same tasks as human. A person in the society who can tell the changes in weather by observing the movement of birds and change in wind direction is considered as important person. A barometer which does not have sight, or self sense does the same task of predicting the weather changes. The functions of the tools should be considered rather than their intelligence and comparison to human capabilities.
The man who can tell weather changes and the instruments that does the same task should collaborate. New tools can be used to further the understanding of the weather changes which will provide a comprehensive report on weather patterns in a given region. Humans have been forced out of tasks they were doing if the new tool proves to be better in performing the same task. Machines or tools enable humans change the way they think and do tasks.
The key point is Watson changed the way people should carry on with their tasks. For instance, those who earn learning by answering questions should take on another task because machines will replace them. The society is also at risk because the educated generation is going to be jobless. This is because machines will take up most of their tasks. There is a huge implications if the machines successfully take up the human jobs. There is a need to come up training programs that offer unique opportunities in the society.
