Wearable technology pertains to clothing and accessories incorporated with advanced computer technology. These are functional gadgets that include trackers that check the status of an individual’s health, provide directions to the wearer, or helps monitor an individual’s moods to control food intake, among other functions. Wearable technology devices enhance and improve the consumers’ lives apart from adding aesthetic value to the accessory.
Among these gadgets are Nike’s FuelBand, a bracelet with Bluetooth connectivity feature that aids in “real-time “synchronization with iOS devices” (Sun). What makes this a revolutionary invention is how it is able to motivate users to stick to their workout routines because the device has an added feature similar to video games where one receives achievement points for their workouts. Google has its Google Glass, which can be used to for “email, text messages, Facebook, Twitter, takes photos, records movies [and provide directional information to users]” (Thompson). This device, however, is not yet available for consumer use.
Based on these technologies, consumers will have a hand in understanding and taking accountability of their health. It can make tremendous changes if consumers will know how to properly use these technologies, as it provides an avenue for users to perform their daily routines with less hassle. What makers believe is that not because a certain idea has remained an idea means it will always stay as one because with the advanced technologies, anything can happen. While these technologies may also track personal information of the user, it does not mean that everyone will have access to them. Thus, as users of these technologies, consumers are highly advised to check user agreements and adjust privacy settings to keep information safe and confidential.
