For this film critique, I have chosen the film Dirty Pretty Things. This film was released in the year 2000. The is a touching story that revolves around the lives of two immigrants. Okwe is an illegal Nigerian immigrant, working as a cab driver at U.K. Back home in Nigeria, he was a qualified physician who was treating patients. On the other side, Senay is an asylum seeker from Turkey, living in the U.K. Her immigration status, forbids her from working in U.K. Both Okwe and Senay, work in a covert West London hotel. Okwe works during the nights and Senay works there as a chambermaid. The hotel is run by Senor and it is a place for dirty business like drugs and prostitution. It provides cover to a number of illegal immigrants. Okwe, manages to offer treatment for poor immigrants, with the drug he steals away from a local hospital, through his friend Gyo Pi who works at the hospital mortuary.
The manager of the West London hotel, runs an illegal organ trade, involving the immigrants who work at the hotel. Immigrants pledge their organs for the passport. In one circumstance, Okwe discovers a human heart in one of the toilets, which is when he learns about this secretive trade that is happening in the hotel. On learning that Okwe is a trained doctor, Juan pressurizes him to join the organ trade. Senay on the other hand is sexually exploited by Juan. During the course of the movie, Okwe and Senay fall in love with each other and on several occasion to help each other out of trouble caused by Juan and the authorities.
Unable to put up with the miseries of their lives and constant threat from Juan and the law enforcement, Senay asks Okwe to join the illegal organ trade and raise money for her to go to America. However, Okwe refuses. Senay later pledges her kidney and virginity to Juan, in exchange for a forged passport with changed identity. On learning Senay’s plan, Okwe agrees to join Juan. In exchange, he demands not one, but two passports with changed identities. One for Senay and another for himself. He agrees to operate on Senay, once the passport is delivered. On receiving the passport, Senay manages to drug Juan. Okwe operates Juan and removes his kidney and sells it to the contractor. Following this, Okwe and Senay, plan of using their new identities and escaping from their present dungeon. Okwe return back to his daughter in Nigeria. While Senay moves to live with her cousin in America. Both Okwe and Senay, communicate their love and liking for each other in the airport. Senay, gives him her cousin’s address in New York.
This is a touching story of loss, love, disappointment and hope. The film creates awareness and social consciousness about the life of illegal immigrants and their struggle. It is a thriller, with a somewhat happy ending. I like stories with happy endings and that is the reason I picked this movie. The narrative is very thrilling. The story has tragedy, romance, thrills, suspense and happy ending. It presents a social situation along with entertainment. It also engages the audience with different cultures of the immigrants.
