The following report is about sustainability issues related to Smithfield/Wetherill Business Park and provides recommendations about fixing these issues for our client, Fairfield City Council (FCC). The Smithfield-Wetherill business park has a manufacturing and wholesale/retail unit and accounts to be the largest industrial estate in the southern hemisphere.

This report does not instruct the client what to do, but rather makes suggestions based on observations and discussions with the managers and business owners.

There is a lack of skilled labour in the local area, which can be fixed by allowing local high school students to learn about taking jobs at the local businesses. The issue of oil spills is something for which the council has taken no responsibility, however it does have information on its website about the related hazards and implementation of their own fixes. Lawn maintenance is another issue that is being faced by the industrial estate. Therefore, it is recommended that the Fairfield council implements strategies to develop the infrastructural environment of the local area along with its own industrial estate. Lastly, it is recommended that the businesses must have proper communication with the council.
In conclusion, it was found that the business mainly consists of manufacturing, wholesale, retail and distribution units. The recommendations provided to the council can be used for improving the industrial estate along with the local area. It can also help in developing the business by improving local employment, convenient location and environmental friendly products from the local suppliers along with many benefits like cheap rent. However, there are certain challenges such as lack of skilled labour, oil spills, traffic and competitive industrial estates. In order to address these challenges, the council aims at implementing the solutions mentioned in the recommendation section.
