Also known as human society, society is a group of individuals that are intricate with each other through tireless associations or a huge communal consortium par-taking the same topographical or social region. A society can as well as elaborated as a concept of a group of associations between persons that are of distinct principles, economic, or political properties and they diverge in intricacy and range (Babbie, 1994). Similarly, it is a group of individuals who encounter each other frequently to participate in common interests. This paper will be endeavoring at elucidating and expounding on the term “society”, the importance as well as the types of society for the sole purpose of understanding what a society is.
The term “society” has its origin from a French word “societe” hailing from the Latin word that implies “societas” that is used to label a connection or collaboration that does occur between gatherings that are responsive or at least enlightened and cultured (Tönnies & Loomis, 2002). It can as well be used to refer to the individuals although those who are unfavorable to the society may be labeled as antisocial for it is used in the sense of an association comprising of characteristics such as national or cultural, social solidarity, language and identity.
There are various types of society’s for instance pre-historic societies where food manufacture that was approved through the use of human and animal labor being the main economic activity. Such societies can be divided into hunters and gatherers societies, pastoral societies, horticultural societies and feudal societies a subdivision that was done according to their level of ingenuity and their technique of generating and manufacturing food. An industrial society is another classification or type of a society that existed between the 15th and the 16th century taking the place of feudal society (Tönnies & Loomis, 2002). In this society, food production was in private controlled something that brought about competition and introduction of metals and silks motivating more commercial activities. Post-industrial society is another example of a society and they are unlike the previous ones subjugated by information, services, as well as high technology than just the production of goods.
In the recent times, the term society has come to incorporate the Information society whereby information technologies impacted the society and culture in a big way. The computer effects falls in this category with the Western society being the other type of a society. It is a society that is associated with the emergence of the Western Culture that came to be known as the western society (Teubert, 2010). The other society is the knowledge society whereby the electronic information is extended from the information society to the knowledge society.
Having looked at the types of societies, looking into the importance of a society will enable better understanding of the word society. One of the advantages of a society is the backing of the creation of organized group of individuals that end up to be known as society (Buzan, 2004). Since a society is associated with a certain culture and it is a society that will enable the adherence of that cultures from all the members of the society. Communal wellbeing and learning facilities, the public transportation schemes and the infrastructures that fosters individuals meet their basic needs form an imperative part of a society among many other importance (Babbie, 1994). Thus, looking at the definition of a society as well as the types and importance of a society for sure enables one to understand what a society really is.
