Freedom is a state of being at liberty and not under any restrictions/confinement. It can also be defined as the state of independence whereby one has a chance to exercise his/her desires and rights without any control from any state or any other body. The Phrase “it is a free country” is very common in the US, and this brings us to the question, is America a free country? The answer to this question is yes, America is a free country. The United States is a free country because of the liberties and the rights granted to the citizens by the constitution and the Bill of Rights. We regard America as a free country because of several reasons; the free press, free public education, free movement, Right to gun ownership, freedom of religion, and equal justice under the law. Therefore, when speaking of citizen’s rights, America is a free country.
In the US, every citizen has the right to access free public education and this makes it a free country. In many countries, accessing education has been an uphill task since many people are unable to pay for it. However, in the United States, it is free in all public schools giving all children a chance to get education. Apart from the free education, the American citizens have the right to equality under the law. America has a fair justice system that protects the citizens against the state, giving them an opportunity for a fair trial.
According to Hennen the US is regarded as one of the free countries in the world taking the 20th position while Hong Kong taking the first position. America gives its citizens the right to vote in the leader they want after a period of four years, something most countries under dictatorship do not have.
Opponents argue that America is not a free country as everyone thinks. They further argue that the state is always spying on its citizens and forcing them to do things making the US no longer a free country (Turley). Nonetheless, just like any other country, America has its fair share of shortcomings, but when compared to other nations, it is fairly a free country. America has one of the best protection or rather freedom of speech, assembly, and religion in the world. The American citizens enjoy these freedoms and liberties because the nation if a “free country.”
In essence, the US citizens enjoy many rights and freedoms which are not enjoyed by other countries making it a free country. They enjoy the freedom of speech, movement, due law process, religion, the right to bear arms, and free public education. In addition, the citizens enjoy the freedom to vote for whoever they want after every four years as long as they are of age. America is a free country because of the excellent freedoms and privileges it offers to its citizens.
