Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress centers on Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, famously known as just “Easy”, and how he is transformed from a routine laborer to become a great detective. In this regard, he is a hero of some sort, in fact the hero of the novel. One quality often associated with heroes is their imminent rise in status despite their not very lucky backgrounds. Here, Easy scores much for he rises from a mere laborer to become a high time detective who earn substantive amounts of money in his dealings. Another heroic attribute that can be attributed to Easy lies in the ironic twist and turn of events that end up with Easy becoming the trickster and not the tricked fool as Albright had earlier thought. With the help of Mouse, Easy rescues Monet and kill both Albright and Joppy. Albright who had initially planned to use Easy and then dupe him in the deal ends up dead. Easy ironically becomes the one involved in his killing. This can never fail to strike one as the height of heroism. He comes out often as a different character who relies on his own conscience in his actions. The voice in himself that advises him whenever confronted by difficult and precarious situations always prevail in the end. That Easy survives the test of times when most of his colleagues perish by the roadside means that he is a hero in his own rights. He understands the intrigues of the deals they are involved in and whenever he senses any betrayal from his colleagues, he dully threatens them that he would sell them away to the police. Fearing that the whole affair might after all boomerang on them, they ensure that Easy is safe. With Mouse on his way back to Texas and Ruby gone, Easy Rawlins is the hero.
Easy Rawlins and Mouse all strive to live by the American dream. that is why Easy finds it okay to take up the job offered by Albright. For Mouse, he has run away from Texas because his family is not happy. But with enough money in the end, he goes back to his family high with the hopes of building a happy family that can live like other Americans. Monet has run away with the money because she wants to live luxuriously while Joppy is also making a shot at the money so as to expand his business and probably move to other better neighborhoods.
The novel Not Without a Laughter by Langston Hughes narrates the experiences of African Americans in Stanton, Kansas in the early twentieth century. Sandy Williams, who is the embodiment of the struggles and challenges through which one undergoes while growing up to become an adult is the protagonist. Basically, it is these struggles that initiate him into manhood, and coupled with the people he comes to contact with during his socialization process that impact on him. These therefore become the benchmarks for analyzing his transformations over time in respect to his values, attitudes and personal conscience and worldview. So that being raised by his highly religious and equally industrious grandmother, Hager Williams, who provide for his needs despite her apparent impoverishment instills hope in him and gives him the impetus to struggle against the odds. He thus inculcates a sense of responsibility in himself at a tender age by always helping his grandmother to carry out certain chores. In addition, growing up in the hands of his mother and grandmother enables him to learn of hard work as the only means to provide for oneself. This manifestation comes clear during the shoe incident as his mother insist on him to put on her old shoes in order to protect his feet from hostile weather. He rejects his mother's assertion and stands firm on his convictions not to ever put on an old woman’s shoes. However, the grandmother quickly intervenes by stressing to him why he ought to have done so since there was no better alternative. It is these utterances that eventually fan his desire to look for a job, his tender age notwithstanding, in order to alleviate their poverty. He gets employed at Drummer's Hotel where he assists in bell-hops. Even though he finally secures some form of employment at Drummer’s Hotel, he does not seem happy for the conditions of work are not favorable. However, Sandy finally began deriving fulfillment from his job and the happiness that accrued due to the fruits of his labor propelled him further. His perception of the world is also changed by his work as he learnt some of the very vital ingredients of living which eventually gave him happiness and a sense of satisfaction.
