Education - the art of giving or receiving systematic set of instructions, in today’s developed world is something as basic as having food, clothing and shelter. Why do we need this education though? There could be several reasons – the main one being to get a job and earn money to sustain a life which in turn would lead to a happy family life.
In real life when we meet someone, on what basis do we consider them to be educated? Is it the number of degrees he has, how cultured his behavior is, how charitable his intentions are, how much money does have or how happy he looks? Is there a known path to reach this esteemed place?
The truth is that there is no single set of people who are considered to be truly educated. Education begins right from the time a child is born into the world and continues on till he dies. A person can have a PhD and lack even basic social skills. Of what use is his technical education to the real world? On the other hand as history shows us, some of the most successful people in the world are school dropouts.
The purpose of education is to make us think. It is a very basic human quality which any educational system must be capable of delivering. Be it technically, socially, economically or personally – an educated person should be in a position to analyze things and act accordingly to achieve his goal. This in turn gives us a sense of purpose, confidence to achieve our goals and ultimately the satisfaction of living a balanced life.
Most of the education systems in the world do not teach what actually is required. A simple teacher – student approach based on assignments and marks can no longer motivate a student enough to realize his true potential. The system needs to be changed to actually prepare a student to face the real life ahead of him, to truly educate him.
