Critical thinking involves a meticulous assessment of information accumulated in a period of time. There is a very strong bond between effective communication and critical thinking skills. Listening skills form an essential part of communication skills. In order to critically analyze a piece of speech, active listening is of the essence. Only once an individual gains an insight into the beliefs, opinions, assumptions and conclusions of another person is he/she able to offer a critical analysis. Moreover, those who can effectively communicate their issues can better get their questions answered that help them enhance their critical thinking skills. Asking the right questions and deriving the hidden meaning from the response or reading between the lines – all are skills that are directly related to critical thinking.
On the other hand, critical thinking also lends a great hand in improving communication skills. At the forefront is the skill of a critical thinker to follow the line of reasoning of his interlocutor. By forecasting the arguments of the other person, an individual can thrash out a better plan and response, and that too in a short time. This is an extremely precious asset for a person especially in the field of law. Moreover, those who have critical thinking skills can view a situation from many different perspectives. Many people are unable to communicate effectively just because they do not know how to move toward a problem with a unique perspective. Thus, the connection between the two is established.
I answered this way because I have myself experienced that I can offer an opinion or a scrupulous analysis only when I have employed active listening. Moreover, by predicting the next case of the other person, I can devise a strategy to render that argument useless quickly. Thus, I believe that a strong relationship exists between the two.
