One’s set of positive, personal values and morals guard against the negative influence of people surrounding him. This is one of the striking points made by this article that struck me the most. Regardless of one’s professional background and experience, we are all prone and susceptible to all kinds of influences surrounding us. If your values are not intact, the more susceptible you are of falling into the suggestions of people around you, the more you do not stand your ground. Leaders are not an exception to this. Being a leader means that you are able to discern what is good advice and what is an advice that can make you arrive at an unsound decision. More often than not, people tend to sway towards what most people think. Standing against the majority renders you unpopular. This affects leaders the most. However, a good leader knows when to go against the tide and stand for what is right, no matter how most of one’s followers think. This is where the leader’s values come in. Values and morals help guide a leader in making a tough decision. Sometimes, also, due to the urgency of the matter on hand, leaders need to make quick decisions. His set of advisers process situations that can help the leader come up with this decision. However, due to the pressure of making this quick decision, the leader now succumbs to this pressure and not take more time considering the suggestions around him, leading him to make errors in judgment. A wise leader takes his time to take everything into consideration to come up with the best decision, even it opposes what the majority think and have agreed upon.
This leads us to the next key point made by this article. In as much as a leader wants to come up with the right decision fast, sometimes just to make a point against the majority, especially if the majority is not in his favor, he does not take the time to consider what they have to say and automatically goes against or rejects their view. This leads to your subordinates thinking that the leader is not supportive of what they have to say resulting to them withdrawing their support and allegiance to their leader. A leader cannot afford this especially when he fails to make his subordinates fully understand why he is in disagreement. In the long run, this opposition of the majority might create a long-standing cold war between the leader and the followers. A leader must know how to influence his followers to see his point eventually, especially when the leader is initially deferring to the majority but will later try to sway them to the point, which might be against their views in the first place. It is very important to win their support first so that they can eventually see yours.
Lastly, leaders must learn to go down and get the details from their staff members. It is impossible for a leader to know everything going on around him. He must rely on trusted members of his staff to funnel these down to him. However, sometimes, the followers filter and downplay what is really going on. The leaders tend to make erroneous decisions based on what is fed to him. The leader must have someone who can negate him to keep him grounded and make him think more about the decision he is about to make. Relying on your followers for much-needed information gives them power which they can easily overuse and take advantage of. The leader must lay the framework and ground rules to keep the followers in line at all times. These will set boundaries for the followers to adhere to. The leader must be open about what he believes in and what he stands for. This way, the followers will know if they are overstepping or are still within limits. Another way for the leader to control the situation from getting out of hand is to set the right examples for his followers to follow. If you want your followers to be honest and straight with you, then the leader must be the same. The followers tend to shadow what they see from their leaders. Giving a good example almost always guarantees that your followers will do the same.
In the long run, leaders are expected to lead wisely using his instincts and his set of values to guide him but not discounting the fact that he also must be open to what his followers have to say. Discerning what he takes into consideration is a trait that a good leader has to develop over time. Letting manipulative followers take the best of him will definitely lead to him making uninformed decisions, which can lead to his failure and his organization’s demise.
