I would ask the author what motivated he or she to be involved in researching white collar crime. Is there a personal reason or just because they found the subject matter intriguing because it is so often swept under the rug. Also, what is their opinion on white collar crime? The video presents it as a cultural phenomenon, but it does certainly occur in other nations. Is it prevalent because of the inner personality flaws human beings possess in regards to greed, striving for social status and an obsession with power?
I don’t think I realized there is a dearth of information on the true statistics of how frequently white collar crime is committed. What I find interesting is for other crimes, there is usually a criminal file of someone that would be more prone to commit that type of crime. For example, a child that has been sexually abused tends to become an abuser and people with substance abuse problems are more prone to commit street crimes. What type of profile exists for a person that is liable to commit white collar crime? Or has it simply not been produced because white collar crime doesn’t seem as “dirty” as a street crime or homicide?
The video raises the questions I mentioned above, but also the question of will the situation ever change? By that, I mean white collar crime has risen and it could be a direct result of the international economy stagnating and never recovering from the 2008 debacle, but will the severity of sentencing ever be bolstered? Also, is the lack of punishment
or leniency, a sign of social inequality? Therefore, will social inequality always exist, no matter how hard we try to eradicate it? Even in the most democratic of societies? I think it signifies a serious social problem that many people are not willing to face.
I have never personally experienced white collar crime, but I have always agreed with how this video was presented. White collar crime shows there is something very awry with how American culture is inculcated in its citizens. The American Dream is not all it is cracked up to be if people have to steal so they attain that vaunted status. I don’t think hard work is stressed as much as it should be and white collar crime is on the rise because our society is in a period of decline. People are becoming more and more selfish and caring less about others or how they receive the results. It’s the results that are important and honestly I can only see this situation getting worse before it ever gets better.
