Geometrical dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T) Is a system that is used by engineers to communicate the tolerance. GD&T uses a symbolic language that is on the engineering drawings, and other computer generated that are three dimensional solid, and they describe the nominal geometry and the variation that can be allowed. GD&T used by manufacturer of machines to know the degree of accuracy and precision that is required on very controlled component of the part.
Importance of GD&T
Understanding of GD&T helps to read the drawings for the engineers and helps one to know what has to be machined carefully. That is the GD&T helps one to be able to know better the specify, control form, the orientation and location of various component and the manufactured parts.
It is very useful in when it comes to the assembling different parts of the machine in that the variation, accuracy and precision of assembling the parts is well known. Hence from that GD&T helps in describing the tolerance level as they are as instructed by the designer of a particular machine.
GD&T help reduces the cost of production of parts. That is when we use the GD&T it will help reduce inspection of the parts that have been produced in large numbers. Use of GD&T has already defined the levels of accuracy and precision hence the engineers who are assembling those parts will assemble them according to the tolerance level given. Hence it becomes unreasonable to spend more money conducting inspection, and you already know from the GD&T that the assembling done in accuracy and precision. Hence this results to reduced cost. The GD&T also provide a bonus of tolerance hence no need to inspect again.
The other importance of GD&T is that there is uniformity in the production of a part. We explained by the fact that when parts are being assembled there is a given level of tolerance. There is is the creation of uniformity of part even if they are manufactured in different locations or different people the accuracy and precision of the parts still remain uniform. The tolerance levels allow for certain variation in part hence there would be uniformity.
GD&T is Important in that it is a universal way of communicating with symbols to create different designs rather than using words that could be too detailed. The drawings on different parts can be easily be interpreted by specialist in the field, and they know the tolerance level for a particular part. The communications are useful in that help manufacturer to create the parts as per what was designed by the designers.
GD&T also helps in ensuring that there is interchangeability of the mating parts at the point in which they are being assembled. Since the tolerance levels are already given hence, it becomes easy to assemble the part.
GD&T also ensures that the design, the dimensions and the tolerance requirement as they relate to their original functions.

In conclusion, we can say that GD&T are very useful in manufacturing industries that assemble parts to create a machine like the wind turbine. Because the tolerance level; are given hence the parts are so assembled in accuracy and precision as per what the designer has instructed. It also saves on cost of production in that inspection is not required.
