I have always been interested on the factors that motivate people’s behavior. Specifically, I often wonder why some people behave or act differently than others. It also intrigues me to think whether a behavior can be deemed abnormal in one culture when it is appropriate and normal on another culture. In other words, I want to know more about the culture’s role in the field of abnormal psychology. Moreover, I have known a few people who suffer from what seems to be psychological disorders (e.g., depression and schizophrenia) and I became more interested to know the factors that causes the abnormal behaviors that are associated with these conditions. My ongoing interest on these things is the reason why I want to take Abnormal Psychology. I believe that by learning about it, I can probably think of ways in which I can relate my interest in the future profession that I will decide to pursue.
Why is it important to study human relations in the workplace?
Within a workplace, people give their efforts in order to achieve a common goal (e.g., increase the company sales). In order to do this, workers must be able to interact effectively with one another. This is why it is important to study human relations in the workplace. By studying this aspect, one can determine how to foster interpersonal skills among workers which are essential in effective interaction. In addition, studying human relationships will help identify possible gaps and weaknesses in the workers’ patterns of communication. In other words, learning about human relationship can help improve and strengthen interpersonal skills of the workers, and this is important in increasing productivity.
This week’s learning:
The most significant learning I had this week is the idea that more than the monetary gain or incentives, workers are often motivated to perform well at work when know and feel that they are valued and given due importance. This is how I understood the central idea of the Hawthorne studies, and personally, it makes sense to me. Although the output of workers are important, it will become insignificant if the workers are not engaged with their work. Ultimately, I learned that employee satisfaction is integral if a business would want to maximize workers’ productivity.
