Fashion is a general trend especially in dress code as well as behavior that is common among a particular group of people. Fashion falls under a wide range; accessories, furniture, body make ups among others. However, when one talks about fashion the first thought that comes to mind is all about clothing. According to Toledo, “But what you most likely don't think of is an art, a career, a passion, or a lifestyle” (2013). Different people have different ways on the style of clothing they wear as well as how they behave depending on their culture, weather, beliefs, personal experiences as well as environment (Lori, 2011). People adopt a particular fashion for different reasons making us to think out “Why fashion is important?” There are several reasons as to why fashion is important to different people. By observing what people wear we are in a position to at least tell their culture, where they come from as well as their profession. Lori explains that, “By looking at the way an individual or group of people dresses, we can learn something about who they are and the society they live in” (2011).
Fashion forms a ground for creativity in an individual who values it. Before a person decides what to put on, a number of thoughts race through their mind irrespective of what inspires or motivates them to wear what they wear. The factor that convinces a person to put on certain clothing is creative in itself. People really think of how they would want to be identified and perceived by others enabling them to be creative about a dressing code that will create the desired image. If a person can try to be creative in their dressing, it also extends to the way they do their other daily activities and hence creativity. Toledo thinks that: “What I have found is that people feel extremely happy when they create something that they like and ends up a success. For example if someone was getting dressed and they decided to wear an outfit that they had never worn before and people complimented them on it they would be happy and self confident” (2013). Even if a person dresses just as the rest of his group mates, there is a way in which they think and perceives their dressing and behavior style. This is what makes them to be innovative and inventive hence creativity aspect in their lives.
Fashion tells a lot about a person’s culture as well as religion. For instance the way women Christians dress is to some way different from the way their Muslim colleagues dress. Culture and religion in most instances go hand in hand. By observing someone’s culture you can tell their religion as well. Toledo believes that, “If people were to dress in clothes from their religion more often it could possibly create stronger faith in religion and less people feeling like it is odd to wear things like that. It would create stronger faiths because if people were to dress according to their religion it would be a daily reminder of their faith’ (2013). It will make people feel comfortable about their religion and culture as well helping to pass on culture from one generation to another. Mossman (2012) states that: “Fashion itself draws inspiration from different compartments of styles while mixing textures, patterns, and eras to create a visual whole that represents a person’s individual ideals.” Fashion cannot be underrated neither ignored in identifying our culture and religion.
Professionalism has changed the way people from different cultures and religions religion dress and to some extent behave. Fashion matches people of the same profession into one thing. Their profession ties them down into a specific dress code. For instance doctors in a theater room dress aprons irrespective of where they came from or what they believed in. Lawyers in a court room have an official dress code that identifies who they are in terms of profession. The dress code makes people develop certain thinking about you. “If you are wearing something that makes you look more professional to a job interview they are more likely to take you seriously and consider you for the job. If people see you and think that you are professional, well kept, and put together than they are more likely to be nice to you” (Toledo, 2013). Therefore, there is no way one can ignore to match their dress code with their profession.
People dress in a particular fashion to display self expression as well as interest. People can dress to declare what is hidden deep in their hearts. For example during weddings and funerals, people dress in a way expressing the feeling they are undergoing within themselves. Lori expresses her thoughts as: “You are communicating to others who you are and what is important to you, whether or not you realize it. The same way of dressing could be viewed completely different in two or more areas of the world” (2011). One should therefore mind what they wear as well as the way in which they behave since it forms a communication to others. Whether you are aware or not, you cannot control what they think but you can change their thinking by dressing differently.
In conclusion, fashion is the ground for creativity in an individual who values it. Fashion tells a lot about a person’s culture as well as religion. Professionalism has changed the way people from different cultures and religions dress and to some extent behavior. People dress in a particular fashion to display self expression as well as interest. Lori (2011) summarizes fashion as: “It is influenced by the society and culture of a given place, weather, environment, and the personal experiences, beliefs, and values of an individual.” Fashion is a very crucial aspect of human beings.
