INTRODUCTION
The modern century is defined by greater merging between different cultures and religions. This can be greatly attributed to the fact that globalization has become significant in the society we live in. globalization can be referred to as the level at which nations merge their relationships based on social, economical or political ties. According to Ruthven globalization has been praised as tool that has greatly improved the way in which nations relate to each other (32). The launch of globalization was first heightened after the world wars nations released the need for peace and harmonious living. Many authors and researchers have cited globalization as positive impact to the modern society. With globalization there are better political strategies, we have improved healthcare facilities, increased democracy in terms of decision making, and great levels of development in third world countries. Ruthven argues that the depth in which nations relate to each other has improved the way in which the western is impacting to the rest of the globe (56).
On a personal level, globalization has led to increased interaction between different social circles. Social circles are based o different social settings and preferences. With globalization this perceptions have been more centralized which has given people the opportunity to interact with different people if they break the language barrier. In words by Ruthven minus the language barrier, every person in the globe is provided with an equal opportunity to relate to any other social circle of their choice (99).
On a negative note, globalization has been criticized as a cause of disunity among nations. According to Ruthven the negative impact of globalization rarely affect the society on the individual level (88). However, the behavior of societies plays a crucial role in heightening the conflict raised by the globalization.
This paper will address the impact of globalization in social circles and civilizations across the globe. Additionally, the paper will give an insight of all the affected factors by globalization in terms of creating conflicts among globalization. The paper will then provide recommendations on what may be the possible solutions that may curb the rising conflicts between different civilizations.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
Introduction
The design used in this research should be based on finding relevant sources to find how globalization has been significant in the rising civilization conflict. The methodology should also be based on effective representation of civilization considering the fact that the different civilizations have different opinion and perception on the trend of the conflicts in the issue in question. Apart from equal representation, the sources of date should be collective to cover the parts where nations are involved. Additionally, feedback from bodies should be included to complement the data collected from individuals.
Problem statement
It is an obvious assumption that globalization has led to the rise of conflicts across the globe. With this known variable, the research methodology tends to address the question of how and why taking feedback from participants affected by the impacts of globalization in terms of conflicting civilizations. Generally, the main problem statement in this case is why globalizations led to the clash of civilizations.
Research objective
The main objective of the research is to establish the extent of the effects of globalizations in advocating for the clash of civilizations. Additionally, correspondents should give feedback that may address the effects of the conflict to their daily activity. The main research objective however, is to provide an insight of the reasons behind the negative effect of globalization in the society.
Methodological framework
The framework in this case will incorporate two main methods of data collection. One is by observation of the global events and the response of participants of the involved parties which can be obtained through media sources or gazettes. To complement these methods, there will be an inclusion of other printed works and sources to justify the collected data.
- Major research question: why globalizations lead to clash of civilization
- Minor research question: to what extent has globalization affected the direction of civilization conflicts? Can anything be done to stop this trend without affecting the positive impact of globalization? Who are to blame in terms of bodies, nations or individuals for the increased rate of clash of civilizations? Who are the most affected by this trend?
- Hypothesis
The hypothesis in this case will be aimed at generating a possible explanation to the reasons why globalization has led to clash of civilizations. In generating the hypothesis, the question asked to the population I question will not be directed to favor any civilization. There would be general consideration of option available in generating the hypothesis that may address and explain the problem statement effectively.
- Assumption
The assumption in this issue include: civilizations will differ on the reason as to why globalization has led to the clash? The entire globe has experienced at least one bit of the civilization clash. The effects of globalization to civilizations are inevitable and natural. The relationship between civilization are greatly influenced by the level at which people handle the trends affecting them. Every response by a person from a specific civilization will represent the view of the entire civilization.
- Limitations
The main limitation in this research design is that the views and opinions given by one person from a specific civilization may not represent the view of each and every other person on the civilization.
RESEARCH DESIGN
- Target population and sampling methods
The target population in this research design is at least five respondents from each significant civilization. Additionally, the target populations are bodies that represent various civilizations. When using observation a sampling method the target population will include an entire civilization and their behavior towards another civilization
Sampling methods that will be depend on the availability of respondents. However, the sampling should be done in respect to significance, experience and quality of response by the selected sample. For example, the response from a person in Jerusalem may be significant from a person in New York in terms of providing quality and in-depth information.
- Data collection instrument and source
The two main data collection used in this search are observational n questionnaires to the selected respondents. Additionally, other related articles and publication either in print or video will be greatly considered in the research design.
DATA ANALYSIS
The participants in this research had a general view and perception that globalization has greatly affected the relationship between global civilizations. However, the participants differed in the justification of these effects some citing the clashes can be justified and appropriate in terms of other nations having democratic rights. On the other hand, others opposed the clashes arguing that this was unnecessary and would only lead to global conflicts with no fruitful end results.
In the western civilization all 5 participants supported that the theory of the theory of the west against the rest of the globe was unnecessary and inappropriate. The same sentiments were shared by the participants chosen to represent Christianity. In the Asian civilization and Muslim religion all participant supported civilization clashed especially those against western rule and supremacy.
In addressing the main research question of why globalization has led to civilization clashes, 80 percent of the participants cited religious and political differences that have been heightened by the increased levels of globalization. This response was rampant among the Muslim participants who argued that their religion is significantly against western civilization and this perception they must follow as Muslims.
Participants in the western civilization were versatile when it came to religion but they cited economic and political battle for supremacy has been increased by globalization which in turn has increased conflict between significant nations in the global market.
In the date collected through observation, there was a general feeling that religion has been diversified by globalization. The effects of religion in global issues especially politically have greatly affected the way civilizations aligned to different religions relate to each other. Additionally, its was a general observation that globalization has increased religious sensitivity in shaping both the political and political perception of their followers.
Another factor cited as a factor causing civilization clash is competition between civilizations. Competition ranging from military, economical and political has been significant in the battle between civilizations.
DISCUSSION AND FINDINGS
After the world wars, many nations realized the need of incorporating different cultures in their societies as a tool of improving global interaction. The strategy was effective as the globe witnessed major boost in travelling by different people to native nations due to the efforts of globalization.
However, these interactions are now the source of major conflict that may create a clash of civilization. In the modern century, civilization is defined by as the way in which people embrace society factors like religion, political views and social perception (Ruthven 101). Political and religious views have the greatest significance in the definition of globalization. The cultural ties people used to hold based on their origin is slowly being replaced by religion which aims at completely creating new global perceptions in people’s minds.
Religion is termed as great course for conflict in most areas. Christianity and Muslim are referred or as great rivals. Minus globalization, there were very few interactions between these two religious groups which translated to less religious specification regarding global factors. In the modern society, religion has become a force in all centers that shape the globe. For instance, religion has shaped the political views in most people which is slowly leading to conflict based in religious views. One significant example is the political instability in Jerusalem between the Jews and the Muslims. In words by Ruthven this particular conflict is based entirely on the religious views on political matters each groups holds (76). Additionally, in resolving the conflict Ruthven points out religious alliance in providing support for either of the groups (94). For instance, the United States which in this case is viewed as Christian nation supports the Jews, and lately Egypt which is a Muslim nation came out strongly to support Palestine.
In highlighting the depth of religious conflicts created by globalization, Ruthven argues that with mixed immigrants in different nations, the interaction between Christians and Muslims may result into conflict in implementing their religious teaching in solving global issues (122).
Another source of conflict based on globalization that may result is the battle for supremacy among nations and continents. With globalization, many nations mostly in Asia have become recognized in the global market for their trade. In most cases countries like Japan and South Korea have been cited as heirs of the global superpower position. This has heightened the conflict between the western civilization and the Asian civilization. Third world countries have now scattered allegiance whether to follow the Asia civilization or stick to the western civilization. For instance in Australia, the nation has a very healthy relationship with the nations in Asia and embrace also embrace heavily western civilization. With the increasing level of conflict between the two civilizations the nation may be forced to stick to one civilization. Minus globalization this conflict would be insignificant since Asia and Australia both could be both depending on western civilization for excellence.
Apart from this selected case, there is an emerging global trend that is cited as the western civilization against the rest of the globe. This is trend in rising greatly because globalization has given other civilization the power to provide opposition (Ruthven 111). The author also points out that the trend is further heightened by the fact that the western civilization has different religion acquaintances to most civilization across the globe. Other significant civilizations in the globe apart from the western civilization are located in Asia and the Middle East who are known to command a significant amount of support in the global market. These tow civilization aim at taking up the superpower mantle from the western civilization.
However, the significance of the western civilization cannot be undermined. In the conflict of the west against the rest, there are three scenarios.
- The non western countries can separate themselves from western civilization which may be costly to their existence.
- The non western countries may join the western civilization and ignore their values and tradition
- The non western countries may moderate their interaction with the western nation and try to create a balance by embracing modernization which in the long-term may be referred to as a result of western civilization in the countries.
In general the possible causes of conflict heightened by globalization may result from
- Qualified manipulation or power (economic or military)
- Discrimination against individuals from a dissimilar civilization
- Intervention to defend tribesmen in a particular civilization
- Diverse values and culture, especially when one civilization tries to inflict its values on people of an unlike civilization
CONCLUSION
It is a general assumption that the level of competition created by globalization is likely to increase in the coming years. This development will automatically boost the trend in which civilization battle for supremacy in global factors. It is a known fact that globalization is inevitable; civilizations are set to heighten their rivalry if the situation is not contained effectively.
There are daily scenes we are exposed to where civilization clash because of sharing different views. This situation is set to rise since many nations cannot let go of the policies they hold. With each civilization coming up with own theories and demand to be considered in the global arena, the situation will remain the same or even get worse by each consensus held to discuss major global issues.
Additionally, religious leaders in the modern century feel the need t direct their congregation suitable to address the religious issue brought up by globalization. These solutions deeply differ from the solutions embraced by other religions. With no religion willing to embrace versatility, the heightened religious rivalry is expected to heighten significantly.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In addressing the issue I question the required recommendation should address the possibility of lessening competition between different civilizations. In this case, all civilization should be brought together under one globalization angle. Since globalization cannot be stopped, the perception of civilizations should be changed. Ruthven argues that competition is healthy but it become inappropriate if peace if distorted (88).
Additionally, religious leaders are in the most appropriate position to launch a peace campaign in the different civilization. According to Ruthven religion dictates a majority of the perception held by people (122). If they could direct these perceptions in the right direction then the global quest to end civilizations clash could take a major step. Civilizations are part of the globe and the perception each civilization holds cannot be changed. For this reason, civilization should learn to respect the rule of law and the origin of other civilizations and the values they hold on to.
