There are numerous special career paths which exist for the accounting major graduates in college. In essence, the availability of accounting jobs in both public and private sectors as well as from the non-profit agencies may be some of the pushing reasons for one to major in accounting. There is heavy reliance on accountants by organizations and governments. These organizations need accountants for the sole purpose of monitoring their finances as well as to ensure that the company’s undertakings run smoothly. This paper is therefore committed to highlight the reasons as to why the author of this essay chose to major in accounting and what career path the author plans to follow.
The first reason that moved the author to major in accounting is the fact of job satisfaction and variety that accounting is endowed with. Almost all financial circumstances taking place in every business environment is likely to benefit from the accountant’s services. In fact, accountants are multifaceted professionals (Gray 2012). They have the capability of carrying out different expert jobs functions like, business consultation, auditing, information technology, management consultation, as well as the services of tax advisory. It is therefore evident that accountants are endowed with rewarding path. This basically sums up to job satisfaction and variety.
Besides job satisfaction and variety, the author chose to major in accounting because of a pull factor. The individuals who pursued accounting to different career paths benefit massively from career security. In fact, accountants write their own ticket. Accountants are able to set their own course of action basically according to their own wishes and needs. Usually, such positions are almost impossible to find in other professions. Currently, there is a deficiency of accounting professions. This puts those who choose to major in accounting to be of high demand. Better still, there is no sign of the trend slowing down. It is a fact that those who majored in accounting are fully guaranteed to secure lucrative job positions.
Many companies and institutions currently fall over one another just to find most talented employees. The introduction of the United States IFRS adoption is yet another opening creating higher demand for those people who major accounting but with expertise which is regarded international. In circumstances when financial institutions claim bankruptcy, a country’s economy is experiencing recession, and there is no job stability, accountants can still write their own tickets. Indeed, there is a career security for those majoring in accounting (College of Business Administration 2012).
Besides, the author chose to major in accounting because accounting has often been regarded as an outstanding route to success career in business. It has often been considered bottom line for business. However, for the last two decades there have been dramatic changes in areas of accounting. Some of the trends are the increase in government regulations, globalization and numerous tax law changes. In the ever increasing complexity and competitiveness of the business environment, the skills in accounting are increasingly in demand. This has made accounting to be one of the most dynamic careers which is another reason it is wonderful to major in accounting (College of Business Administration 2012). Accountants assume the roles of financial experts, budget analysts and management consultants. It is significant that the accountants demand continuously grows and outstrip supply. Thus, employment opportunities in the current business climate are more promising than ever for those who major in accounting.
In conclusion, based on the aforementioned facts, the author plans to follow private industry accounting as the desired career path. This entails preparation of financial information needed for control and management of company’s activities. Therefore, apart from the preparation of financial statements used in external reporting, a person is able to undertake numerous internal accounting reports like budget analyses.
