I believe every human being on Earth has his or her own destiny and a mission to fulfill. This is not always apparent at an early age, for many times our mission becomes clear only after we have gone through decisive experiences in life. In my case, taking care of my mother, who became ill with breast cancer, and caring for my father during his last days after a fatal injury, were eye openers for my vocation.
I started college majoring in _______________________. It was at this time that my mother became ill with breast cancer and my father was cheated by his business partner. With my mother’s costly medical treatments and my brother going to medical school, our finances got so tight that we almost lost our house. To help with family expenses I ended up taking up two full time jobs and taking care of my mother while going to school. Needless to say my GPA suffered and it took me longer to finish undergraduate school. I took up jobs in medical offices and nursing homes, and with the experience of taking care of my mother my wish for becoming a nurse became more intense, but it was not the right time to pursue it. I was discouraged by my lower performance in school, but at the same time, my experience taking care of my father during his fatal accident and my determination to overcome the resulting obstacles would provide me with the necessary strength to move forward.
It was last year that my father fell and injured his head requiring emergency surgery. Once again my life was shattered by circumstances beyond my control. My father fell into a coma. I spent every day and night by his side as did the rest of my family. All the time I watched how the nurses and doctors took care of my father. Born in the days when I took care of my mother, my wish to become a nurse resurfaced as I watched the medical staff trying to save my father’s life. He put up a courageous struggle. Night after night he always made it even when the staff told us he wouldn’t make it past the night.
The day came when my father could no longer stay in the hospital because his health insurance ran out. He either had to go to a nursing home or return home. We didn’t have the heart to place him in a nursing home, so we took him home and we trained with doctors and ICU nurses (intensive care unit nurses) to give him the proper care at home until he finally passed away after three months. During this time I ended up becoming his official nurse: I learned to give him medication and food using a G-tube. I learned to take his vital signs and to give him shots. I also changed the trachea tube, the collar and inner canal. I learned to clean and change a catheter and to cure bed sores. I even helped my father do breathing and physical therapy exercises. Although my father passed away a few months ago, bringing him home was the best we could have done for him so he could die in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. This decision gave me a lot of pride and consolation because I contributed to his well-being during his last days.
Taking care of my parents helped me gain valuable experience and training in the duties of a nurse and confirmed my vocational call. My goal now is to acquire a solid foundation in the field and I am sure (NAME OF PROGRAM) at (NAME OF SCHOOL will be the best place to achieve my goal. I know the road won’t be easy, but I have a strong drive and determination that will sustain me in this all important endeavor. I have always thrived on challenges, decision-making and taking initiatives. My personal experiences have made me realize that providing patients with medical care and a supportive environment require strong commitment and dedication. These goals are not always easy to achieve, but I am willing and ready to do my best.
