On Saturday, 23 November, 1963 BBC1 launched the first episode of the longest science fiction television show - Doctor Who. It has been almost 51 years, but it still remains one of the important parts of British culture, moreover its national treasure. But why does it actually worth watching?
The main character is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, who looks like a human and travels all with his companions from Earth through all time and space in his time machine and tries not to interfere in the future or past events, but always ends up saving the world, especially his favorite humans. The most significant part of the show is the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), the last time machine in the universe, that the Doctor stole from the Time Lords and began travelling in it. The best part of this advanced technology is that it looks like a British vintage police box and is much bigger on the inside. Normally, TARDIS has a "chameleon circuit", that allows to change its shape , but since it was broken, the ship is now stuck in this form.
The show has been running for so many years, and no wonder, that the runners had to come up with a solution of what to do if the main actor leaves Doctor Who. That is why after 3 years from the beginning, when William Hartnell didn't feel that good anymore, because of the old age and started to forget some lines, the creators decided to change the actor without changing the direction of the show. It has been explained, that the Doctor can regenerate after dying and become a totally different person - a new taste, body and even catchphrases, but with the same memories. By 2014 The Doctor had already 13 bodies (including the War Doctor), played by brilliant and talented actors.
Doctor Who wasn't always such a hit, especially in the United States, mostly because of the cheap special effects and weird looking monsters, but it was popular in UK for years. Nevertheless, BBC1 decided to close the show in 1989. In 1996 was produced a movie, that showed a regeneration of the 7th Doctor, but unfortunately didn't lead to new series because of the low ratings in the US. In 2005 Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner took a risk and restarted the show. So the series were relaunched and the best part was that it was the continuation of the original story and the 9th Doctor started to save the world from monsters without rebooting Whoniverse.
So why people love this Doctor, or the "madman with the box", how he started to call himself? First of all - the main character. Every actor who played the Doctor had something unique to show the audience and changed the Time Lord. Some of them were young (Matt Smith, 11th Doctor was only 26 when he entered the show) or old (Peter Capaldi - 12th Doctor and William Hartnell - 1st Doctor were 55), some of them were a bit grumpy, some of them were a bit silly and loved to dance, others were lonely and always running from something.
As the 10th Doctor said: "Same man, new face. Well, new everything". The most thrilling part is that the Doctor after regeneration doesn't know himself. He starts to ask questions - is he a brave? Sarcastic? Right handed? Finally, ginger? (he always wanted to be ginger!) So the Doctor doesn't know himself anymore, neither does the audience and when the new person takes a lead, it sometimes unbearable to get used to someone so different and people want their old Doctor back. But then they can actually see how brilliant is a new main character and that he just as good (or even better), than the last one.
Another wonderful part of the show is that it takes place all over the time and space. One day the Doctor saves the world from the World War III, then he meets Elizabeth I and gets married, also he can say hello to his old friend Winston Churchill and fight some monsters or can help Vincent Van Gogh to find more courage and never give up on his talent, or even end up at the End of the Universe (the year 100,000,000,000,000) and watch the last people trying to save their lives.
So you never know where the Doctor takes you next and whom you can meet. And you meet not only the great historic figures, but also the dreadful creatures which make you really afraid! There are a lot of villains who try to fight the Doctor for the last centuries. You see, the current 12th Doctor is more than 2000 years old now and some of his enemies keeps coming back for him for quite a while! The best known are probably the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans and Wheeping Angels. The last ones are probably the most fearful creatures in the show, since they look like stone statues of angels, but as soon as you blink Well, you still have to watch the show to know what happens next! But the most important part - don't even blink.
The opening titles are a great part of the show. It looks different almost every season, the music keeps changing a bit all the time, but even after so many years the main theme is the same. Music is very important, and the show already had a lot of talented composers to create more beautiful accompaniment. Now it is Murray Gold, who manages to write extraordinary music, that can be touching or adventurous at the same time.
People who start to watch the show and then suddenly meet someone dressed as a Doctor (for example in a bow-tie and tweed jacket or really long scarf) at the street, start to smile and feel like it's a long lost friend. And the best part is that a Doctor Who fan can have as many friends as he or she wants! Steven Moffat was presented a Guinness World Record for the largest in history simulcast of the TV drama. The Day of the Doctor was a special episode for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary and was broadcasted across 6 continents in 94 countries. The whole world (more than 77 million people) was watching the episode at the same time. This is something unique, that unites all the fans all over the world, who came to the movie theatres dressed as the Doctors and saying some cool catchphrases like "Allons-y" ("Let's go" in French, something that the 10th Doctor loved to say) or "Geronimo!".
This show is really special and makes a person feel like a part of a great Doctor Who universe, with a lot of adventures, drama, tears, fights, laughs, crazy dances, fashionable costumes, bow-ties, sonic screwdrivers and lots of running involved.
