Joy’s lecture raises various ethical dilemmas in its delivery. The talk is interesting and well executed; furthermore, it appears to be well-received by the live audience. However, the more important moral issues result from his suggestions, rather than from his views on the world.
Joy’s lecture talk is thought provoking as he asks his audience to think about ethics and morality which are based on a likely future. Essentially, he is tackling ethical dilemmas such as how to control and shape a future which is predicted to be bleak. Perhaps it is unsurprising that Joy supports the growth of technology and its possible future usages. This view is rather stereotypically scientific as it relies on the development of new technology to solve problems, rather than using technology already at hand, or finding a solution which does not cause additional harm to the environment.
The downside of Joy’s argument is that it suggests inequality as the answer to a dilemma which is mainly caused by inequality in the first place. It is the imbalanced supply of products and knowledge which appears to be the cause of the majority of the suggested future issues, and is supposed to govern the "distribution of inequality" rather to tackling the larger problem of discrimination. It seems that, rather than being an effective solution, this practice would only serve to widen the discrimination gap even further.
Joy deliver’s an interesting, provocative and thoughtful lecture. If nothing else, the talk raises interesting ethical dilemmas that more people around the globe should be considering. While it is questionable whether Joy’s approach is a solid way forward, at the very least his lecture encourages us to think about what the future holds.
