A Masters degree in Information Systems is designed for those students that have a passion for and want to pursue a career in information systems and the methods to integrate information and communication technologies in world business. Today’s markets are extremely competitive environments, and the proper execution and distribution of information technology has shown to be key to success in business. New applications of information technology are reassessing the nature of work and its organization. There is a current shortage of people that are specialists and managers in this field and yet they are greatly needed to reshape international industries.
An education in Information systems with a minor in finance would enable me to explore the myriad ways that computer technologies can enhance productivity and efficiency. Research has been revolutionized by the information sciences. Searching for useful information was once and arduous task that made for many sleepless nights, however, today information is retrievable from the comfort of our own homes, every day of the year, with fewer physical requirements. The boon in productivity as a result of the implementation of informatics systems is seen in many diverse fields, from medicine and law, to architecture and accounting.
I have always been passionate about simplifying processes. My interests in math lead me to seek a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics while simultaneously pursuing a degree in Business Administration – Accounting. Throughout my studies I maintained a GPA of 3.4, and the courses were interesting and challenging. After university I began my career as an Accounts payable supervisor where I was responsible for the administration and coordination of all the activities performed by the accounts payable staff. I approved invoices and audited vendor files to review pricing. In later professions I was engaged in accounting and as a financial analyst. As an accountant my training enabled me to review various ledgers, coordinate with staff to perform internal audits, and prepare reports detailing our operations. While working as a financial analyst at Engle Homes, I was responsible for forecasting and consolidating the expenses of multiple departments. Furthermore, I collaborated with peers in many departments to perform ad-hoc analyses and reviews of the budgets and variances. Finally, I served as the main point of contact between department heads when reviewing corporate information and researched and reported on varied questions that the departments had.
My present role is as a Corporate Accounting Supervisor for HomeServeUSA. My role at HomeServeUSA allows me to employ many of the talents and skills I have learned through university training and on the job experience while maintaining a challenging and enjoyable work environment. My duties include management of all intercompany payables, management of the monthly ledgers, audit balance sheets, execute check lists, perform daily accounts reconciliation, perform lease vs. buy calculations, supervise and train associates, and assistance with internal and external audits.
Technical proficiencies that I have acquired while working in my various functions include: Microsoft excel, Hyperion Planning and Essbase , Oracle, Great Plains, Agresso, JD Edwards, AS400, Quick-books and People Soft, Advance knowledge of query system. In addition, throughout my carreer, I have specialized in the following areas: GAAP Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Project Accounting, Financial Close, Internal & External Audit, Inventory Management, ERP Implementations, SEC Reporting, Revenue Recognition (SOP 97-2), FAS 144 - Impairment Testing, SOX
Throughout my work experience I primarily learned the meaning and the value of efficiency. Information systems technology has created enormous opportunities at the operations of corporate offices. Information systems are used by all corporations; from the very small to the very large. Information systems allow the tracking, storing, manipulation, and distribution of information to the correct people in a streamlined fashion. The systems support decision making in corporate boardrooms by providing critical data. Finally, the also enable enhancements in the communications of the company, reducing the required work-force, and aid in the support of short and long-term strategies and goals.
Information technology has ushered in an era of increased globalization and a sense of world unity. One needs to look no further than the nightly news to observe the events that have unfolded in the Arab world over the last few years. Information systems are largely responsible for the unfolding of these events considering how the revealed the power of social networking and the capacities it has to enable social collaboration and action. Countries that were once separated by many miles of oceans, today, can instantaneously share vast amounts of knowledge. Furthermore communication has become cheaper, faster, and less prone to failure. Worldwide communications occur instantaneously and video conferencing has revolutionized the way people meet to conduct business. This enables businesses and organization to focus on their final product, as opposed to the minutiae of administration. Furthermore, the ubiquity of these systems serves to bridge different cultures and encourages communication and the free exchange of ideas.
With the implementation of these systems there is often improved cost effectiveness. Systems are in place to streamline operations at businesses and this streamlining allows for a better ability to adapt to and an ever-changing business climate. This has lead to increasing free time. Information technology systems has enabled stores to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at every city in the world. This has allowed for international trade to be carried out at an unprecedented level, as purchases from one region are rapidly dispatched to another region of the globe.
Information technology systems also play an important role in the future of jobs creation in the marketplace. Information systems require many specialized professionals, including, programmers, analysts, hardware and software developers, and artists for creating content. New jobs in the financial universe may also be created with thorough implementation and maintenance of these systems.
While there are many advantages that information technology provides to the world, there are also many potential disadvantages in technology implementation. Privacy is greatly compromised, a lack job security, and a promotion of a dominant culture, have all been cited as critiques of information technology systems. It will be interesting to study the various rules and regulations, as well as the ethics of these issues, and their application to various interactions throughout the world.
Information technology has revolutionized how the world conducts business. Having worked in the field of accounting and financial analysis, I saw first hand the many ways information technology systems improve the functions of corporate offices. I have further seen many processes that may potentially be made simpler with information technology. A degree in information sciences with a minor in finance would enable me to understand the entire process of information system deployment. It would afford me the opportunity to study diverse fields from network architecture, to programming languages and software development, to application in diverse fields such as healthcare and telecommunications. Through mastery of these fields it is possible to fully understand the systems different organizations implement. Furthermore, it will enable me to comprehend the process of making improvements in existing system should shortcomings be detected, and to create new information systems to solve problems that have yet been posed.
