F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story, Winter Dreams, can surely be deemed as one of the very best works of English literature. The story with all its affective appeal and quintessential aesthetic charm leaves a very lasting impression on the mind of any readers. A close introspection of the literary work would let one have a better idea about the intricacies of the portrayal and how the author stirs the minds of the avid readers. It needs to be noted that the setting of this story plays a vital part in bringing out the effect of the content. Moreover, the setting is intertwined with the psyche of the male protagonist of the story, Dexter Green.
A major part of all the action in this story occurs in the Sherry Island Golf Club. It is here that Dexter sees the younger Judy Jones. Also, this is the place that lets him have an idea about the lifestyle of the famous and affluent people- something that he truly wants for himself. The beauty of the setting relates to the notion of beauty and affluence in the mind of the male protagonist. Sherry Island works as the ideal for Dexter as he goes there when he dreams of bettering his social and monetary standards. Dexter wants to spend all the time in this place, but is unable to forget his own humble background that he has left in this past. The fancy New York as a setting comes across to be the representative of the aspirations and dreams of Dexter. The setting shows the grandeur and attractiveness in stark contrast to Minnesota.
Thus, it can be commented that the setting of this story stands for the deep aspirations of Dexter. Indeed, he lives his life in his dreams only to be disillusioned after many years. It is truly commendable how the stalwart author has utilized the setting of this moving story to bring out the inner thoughts and ambitions of the male protagonist. Both the Sherry Island Golf Club and New York stand for what Dexter wants to be, and these places stand in juxtaposition to his humble past.
