Women, in general, have suffered many years under a patriarchal society which reserved very few professions for women. This paper will seek to study the progression of women of color in various professional fields, and their rate of progression over the last twenty years. However, the focus will be on the progression over time of women of color into politics, a filed which requires a lot of determination and vast social and financial resources to be successful in.
Research Questions
In conducting the research, the following research questions will be used to guide the study on the progression of women of color in politics in the United States over the last twenty years.
What percentage of politicians in the three tiers of government in the United States were women of color twenty years ago?
How have these perceptions changed over the last two decades?
Has there been a change in the number of women of color in politics over the last two decade? What is the trend?
What are the current perceptions about the women of color in politics?
Justification for the study
In order to clearly appraise the performance of the current women of color politicians, an insight to the struggles made by such politicians previously need to be available so as to form an objective benchmark for their appraisal. The progression of women of color through the political ranks and the barriers that they had to fight to succeed will thus give an informed position on the current status of women of color politicians. Thus, this study will enable a more objective appreciation of the positions enjoyed by women of color.
Mode of Study
The study will be carried out in two major modes. The first will involve an analysis of the statistics relating to women of color in politics available from various agencies to determine the progression trend in the last twenty years. Previous studies on the same subject will be explored to obtain the required insights on the position of women of color in politics at various points over the last twenty years. The second method of conducting the study will be through the use of questionnaires to gauge the current perceptions about women of color in politics and their performance. A sample group will be chosen from various social groups and the questionnaire administered. Statistical analysis will be used to come up with the results.
Expected Results
The study is expected to show continuous progression in the involvement of women of color in politics over the last two decades. It will show objectively the rate of growth and thus from the study, projections will be made on the future participation of women of color in politics.
