Introduction
The review of Wong Kar-Wai’ work by Peter Brunette is an inclusive yet critical analysis of Wong’s films which provides the audience with an insight of the themes of filmmaking aesthetics. Mazierska and Rascorali explore the theme of time in Wong’s films by exploring the various ways in which Wong displays his understanding of postmodernity. These two theses on Wong’s works evoke several questions.
For instance film, students might be tasked to answer the various ways in which Wong directs his films. Thus, examination questions may include: In what way does Wong stand out as a film director compared to his counterparts who produce films in martial arts. What aspects of cinematography are evident in the works of Wong Kar-Wai as a film maker? How does Peter Brunette, Mazierska and Rascorali succeed in critically analyzing Wong Kar-Wai as a director and film maker?
The film Grandmaster as directed by Wong Kar-Wai introduces the audience to the art of Kung-Fu and bases his main character on the life of Ip Man, a prominent Kung FU master. Wong incorporates the use of visuals to capture the attention of the audience by creating a picturesque era of martial arts. Wong’s ability to effectively use visuals in this film are emotionally rich, allowing his audience to reminisce on the historic events in ancient China and Japan through the characters in the film. One of the most outstanding scenes in this film according to me is the scene whereby Gong Yutian fights Ip Man. During the duel fight, the audience gets an elaborate idea of martial arts. Wong approach is distinct as he mainly uses this scene as a way to involve his audience and allow them to experience martial arts through the characters. This scene plays a critical role in explaining the codes of conduct and philosophy of martial arts to the audience.
Gong and Ip Man make their duel fight a memorable scene in ‘Grandmaster’ by portraying the values of martial art. Discipline and honor are two values that are revealed in martial arts through these characters. For example, it is notable that Ip Man’s discipline is what enables him to prosper in his fights whereas Gong’s honorable attitude is noted when he gracefully accepts defeat. Wong’s style of filmmaking is evident due to his ability to draw attention to small details in this scene and make them significant to the audience. The shots in this scene are short and precise; they are brief sequences that have concealed discontinuity making Wong’s elliptical style of storytelling to stand throughout this scene. From this scene, one can discover the striking difference in this production and past productions by Wong. In his previous films, Wong builds a rather conflicting tension between his characters in which they battle with their personal reservations and external passions. However, in the film Grandmaster, the duel fight between Gong and Ip Man, allows the audience to feel the disconnection of emotional feelings in his characters.
In order to have an elaborate understanding of Wong Kar- wai’s style of production in the film The Grandmaster, it is important to have an extensive analysis. Hence future studies should focus on ways in which Wong can manipulate the art of film making such as visuals, lighting, and shots to maintain an elliptical and relevant storyline for his audience.
