Bullying has become part of the society, and the reality only dons when one becomes a victim. There are countless forms of bullying that people undergo in different places. However, the unusual cases of bullying have been witnessed in the workplaces where the employers or even senior employees often stretch their fierce claws on their colleagues in a bid to stamp authority over them. It becomes critical to understand the problem as a serious issue that faces the labor industry in every part of the world rather than a fuss that is meant to taint somebody’s reputation. In the view of the author of this book, people often tend to wish away the reality of bullying as merely a problem of people who have failed to live up to their strengths in the society. However, it is clear as demonstrated through the metaphoric application of the narratives of the victims that the situation is pathetic and way beyond what meets the eye. The knowledge of the metaphors of the target has been instrumental in understanding verbal forms of bullying. For instance, while on a placement, a senior colleague swung his hand in my direction and hit me then said it was accidental. However, we had some verbal exchange over lunch break in which he expressed discontent over my refusal to be verbally abused. During the incident, he said I ought to have been sold as slave. Connecting the former and the latter, it was clear that it was hardly an accident. I reported to the supervisor as a bullying case. People in the workplace exhibit different forms of characters that make very difficult to correlate harmoniously with colleagues without any attempt to inflict pain on them or rather show superiority over them. It is thus important to any form of bullying be condemned in the best manner possible. The disparity that such analogy brings to the mindset of the society is the reality of what many people seem not to understand as part of the rotten social setup inhibiting the labor industry.
Given the revelations about bullying in the workplace as demonstrated by the authors through the use of metaphors, I have been working and upping the efforts to create policy changes to the labor sector to enable the employees to deal with any form of malice that is aimed at them and meant to inflict pain on them. Taking into account this view, it is critical to understand that changing the society would require the appropriate application of metaphors to put everything into its more consumable form and state that people tend to understand it better. Understanding the contextual analogy of the book has enabled acknowledge that bullying is real as well as helped me understand the forms of bullying that people tend to experience. The knowledge has been instrumental in understanding the workplace narrative of bullying target rather than victim the reverse is true. In many cases, people tend to wish away certain acts or forms of behavior towards others as a mere form of cowardice. Such knowledge has been useful in defining the acceptable interactive behavior and the extent to which any form of verbal or physical engagement should not exceed. The reading has also enabled me to understand what characterizes bullying to be able to categorize any action as bullying or not. As asserted by Tracy et al., bullying is often characterized by escalation, repetition, power disparity, as well as duration. Taking into account the above characteristics, I’ve been able to deal rightly with any form of action aimed at me in its right context. Therefore, I have been able to overcome and confront any form of workplace abuse through a proper understanding of how bullying is executed. It is important to understand the composition of bullying and its various forms to be able to different actions aimed at you as either bullying or banter. Having such understanding has helped shun bullies and their evil tendencies.
