A. The process of creating the portfolio was a very absorbing and interesting experience for me. I believe, it is an essential stage in the work life of any candidate who is striving to start a career in a new sphere or start working at all. First and foremost, it involves profound analysis and self-analysis, which takes much time and effort, so your research and work are not superficial or instantaneous, thus it could be called a very good job. In the process of creating the portfolio I had a chance to analyze my own skills and abilities – not only in writing, but also in regard to my professional competence.
When I started planning my portfolio, I thought about my past and life experience, and looked for the ways to connect seemingly disconnected things, to find arguments for my opinion and present them in the necessary succession. I also had an experience of creating a graphics, which involved an entertaining process of searching and studying pictures, structuring the information in short, but meaningful portions, and composing the main ideas on a very small space. Moreover, the reflective essay required thorough investigation of the profession of a psychologist, its advantages and disadvantages, and studying the personality of a typical psychiatric and a doctor. This analysis also made me think about myself in the role of a doctor saving people’s lives and the possibility to become one someday. Analysis of the job advertisements helped me to look into the demands which each specialist working in this or that sphere should meet and again extend it to my own life and think whether I can meet these demands described in the advertisement and which demands I would place for such a position, if I worked as a HR manager.
All in all, I have come to the conclusion that creating a portfolio is a very useful process, which helps one to analyze his/her own abilities and life in general.
B. When I was working on my portfolio, I encountered many interesting facts and nuances, which I hope to utilize someday in my own life and career. For example, I have read much about psychology and its saving function and found out that it is really a very absorbing profession and sphere, that working with people’s soul is a very responsible and risky process, and that a psychologist must have a certain power, courage, and compassion to aid people in their inner tortures, addictions, and other problems. Furthermore, I have learnt about different cases in medicine and healthcare which struck me and made me respect doctors and psychiatrists even more. Besides, I have learnt that psychology is not strictly connected to medicine only, it can be applied in any professional sphere, since each specialist usually has some troubles connected with his/her own life or work which undoubtedly affect effectiveness and success in work. That’s why some employers should hire a psychiatric for the staff or, for instance, at school for children. So, the most interesting things I have learnt were connected with the unfamiliar sphere – psychology.
C. As far as I am concerned, the portfolio creation process should be an indispensable part at any college and university or just as a separate course for other people. Students and undergraduates could spend some time on creating this portfolio. Of course, few people would like to spend a few weeks on collecting information and analyzing it from their own point of view, but in the end they would be surprised by the results, after the matching of their desires, professional aspirations, expectation from the job, and the received data about the actual situation. They would evaluate their own abilities and reflect, whether they suit for the profession they would like to work in. However, not only students, but any working person can create it even in the middle of his career. Thus he/she will learn whether the chosen way is good or bad and maybe even find the cause of his/her failures at work. I am sure that serious approach to creating portfolio may open yourself to you, since it is actually a profound self-analysis, from psychological point of view. One of the main things is to stay critical and objective. That’s why I believe that writing a reflective essay and a memoir essay is one of the most important aspects of this portfolio. Thus, I would recommend any person to try this and see the results.
