I am alarmed that if everyone lived like me, it would require 4.2 planet Earths to provide adequate resources. Additionally, it would take 18.5 global acres of the earth's productive area to support my lifestyle. This space accounts for the area needed for resources such as energy, cropland, grazing land, forest land, real-estate, fishing grounds, other foods, and services such as waste disposal. With a total footprint of 38.2 tons of carbon dioxide per year, there is little comfort in knowing that I am performing only 27.2% better than the average household in my location.
Consumption of meat and meat products increases the global acreage used in my food production. A lack of recycling paper, plastic, electronics or polyethene also puts pressure on the earth's limited resources. Moreover using non-renewable electricity sources generates waste, causes pollution and utilizes high amounts of resources to generate required electricity. Another element that affected my score is the use of non-energy efficient electric appliances. Equipment such as phones and computers do not use renewable energy sources or use their power sustainably. My modes of transport by public and or private means uses petroleum fuels, and this consequently increases my carbon footprints.
My ecofootprint scores were helped by more or less efficient water usage, economic spending on services and goods such as furniture, clothing, and limited air traveling. After adjusting some of the input data items, my score went down by 0.8. The new score shows that it would require 3.6 earth plants to support my life if everyone on the planet lived as I do. Living on a lower eco-friendly level would require changes in travel mode, travel frequency, electricity source, water usage and diet.
