Just about anywhere you go you can probably here someone gossiping about their friends, relatives, famous actors or singers. Gossip is everywhere and everyone gossips. There is no age limit, no set gender or race – everyone loves to chit chat. The little children in the sand box, teenagers in the mall, old ladies on the bus and grandpas on the benches – we all are guilty of gossiping every now and then or maybe even every day. You may hear your parent gossip about the neighbors or other family members. You most likely have heard you grandma gossip about the nosy lady that sat next to her during bingo. but
Back to elementary school I can remember us always talking about childish things like who likes who, who has a new toy, who wears a pajamas of what color and so on. On the playground we often talked about what another kid had on or how their hair was fixed, what clothes they had. In the cafeteria we gossiped about why one or another kid had something wrong in his lunch box. The school hallways were always lined up with art works that the students painted and I can remember my friends and me running up to certain pictures, pointing fingers, smiling and giggling. It was done unconsciously and it felt good and it was fun and we did it all the time.
Unlike the childish undeliberate gossiping, teenage gossiping can be cruel and mean. The middle school and the high school are the places where most of the most damaging gossip can happen. The students in class interrupt the teacher just to tell their best friend what a great weekend you had, how was your date, what an ugly make up your classmate has or even to tell how the person next to you stinks. A pause between classes is where a huge roar of gossip can be overheard. You have only from five to ten minutes to get out all the juiciest gossip you know. Everyone talks about someone or something – Anna’s new shoes, Jack’s newly updated status on Facebook, Emily’s yesterday’s tweet or Tom’s Snapchat. Social media are the biggest source of gossip you can imagine and it is really becoming more widespread and popular among teenagers. Gossiping is very stimulating and so juicy, some of it may even be lies and slander created on purpose, but we do it because it is fun and entertaining. The victim of chit chat is usually a person, whom the others envy, jealous or grudge.
Most adult gossip can be heard between adults in the grocery stores, buses, workplaces or just on the streets. My mom will spend hours at the grocery store if she runs into one of her friends or family members. My dad usually gossips during a football game with his friend, even though they would never admit that they were gossiping. I have even overheard my mom on the phone gossiping with grandma about the neighbor. In the center of gossip are usually someone’s relationships, habits or family problems.
But the real sources of gossip are elderly people. Because of the lack of everyday activities and work, they have a lot of free time that can be devoted to gossiping. They notice everything about everyone and do not mind to share it with other people. My grandma likes to sit on the porch, watch the neighbor people walk by and talk about them. She will let you know the good and the bad about each person as they pass by her front porch. Grandma likes to visit her friend, who is in the nursing home and they will sit in the cafeteria and talk about each and every person they see and what they are having for dinner. One time I went to bingo with her and she got me stared – we were talking about who looks like they were cheating and who was actually cheating. It was thrilling and exciting and I, frankly speaking, loved every moment of it.
So, to make a conclusion, I think that absolutely everyone loves to gossip whether it is a bad gossip among teenagers or innocent gossip among children in the sand box. Gossip is not limited to young people, adults as well as aged people like to gossip, too. Point blank – everyone likes to gossip.
