Introduction
It is the aim of every employee to be happy while in the workplace. Keeping employees happy improves their productivity and make them love their responsibilities. It is a common phenomenon for employees to feel that they are more valuable than the remunerations they receive. This makes them dissatisfied, and desire to look for greener pastures. However, many employees are unwilling to disclose their dissatisfactions to the management, as they fear to risk their jobs.
Things Needed to Make One Happy in the Workplace
During my last job, I was working as a human resource personnel, and I was not at all satisfied. Employers can utilize various mechanisms geared to make their employees happy, as it is employee performance that dictates the success of a firm. It is the hope of every employee to have an understanding employer, as this is among the primary ways that can keep him/her happy. Being a community-minded person is also an essential attribute in the workplace, and this quality helps employees perform their duties accordingly as the workplace seems lively (Fisher, 2010). It is advisable for employees to create time after work to enjoy with their workmate and share life experiences. Sharing work experience ideas does not only make employees happy, but enlighten them on ways of making various tasks in the workplace easier, allowing them to enjoy what they do.
Employees should aim to keep the environments of other employees conducive, allowing everyone to work peacefully. If one employee cares about the other employees, they tend to become cared too by their fellow employees, and this action will keep everyone happy in the workplace. Caring employees leads to Hawthorne effect, which is an increase in productivity in the workplace when employees feel that their affairs are cared for (Jones, 1992). Focusing on the positive side of the business is another way of becoming happy in the business. Focusing on the negative side in the workplace denies employees chances of becoming happy since it makes one feel a loser, and ends up being frustrated, de-motivated, and annoyed. Employees should also join hands with their workmates to give back to the society, as this activity much improves corporation of employees, making them work together happily to accomplish a common goal both in the society and workplaces (Jones, 1992).
Fisher (2010), points that happiness starts from oneself and it a choice of every member of staff to be happy. A productive employee should learn what makes him/her unhappy, de-motivated and stressful, and try to avoid these vices at all costs. Other ways of keeping one happy and a resourceful employee include asking feedback frequently, making only the commitments that one can keep and practicing professional courage (Fisher, 2010).
The Interview Findings
I conducted a phone interview with the interviewee, as we were far apart. The interviewee is known as Professor Jefferson, a leader in a leading human resource management and also my former employer. The purpose of contacting him was to interview him on how candidates can accomplish different desires in the workplace. He sounded more of a motivation speaker, and as our interview and engagement went on, the more insightful and informative the discussion became. Mr. Jefferson stated that there are seven steps that candidates and other employees need to observe toward achieving their needs in the workplace. These steps include identifying and defining various needs in the workplace, selecting and engaging on the stipulated needs, establishing the expectations of the workplace, understanding and developing skills and knowledge required in the workplace, providing and receiving feedbacks, managing the work environment, and growing and extending careers (Bowen & Lawler, 1992).
Key Observations
The key observations from the interview were that for any employee to succeed in the workplace, he/she must ensure that he/she goes through the seven steps. The steps will make the candidate to be productive throughout the period of his/her career, and be motivated by the positive results of their experience, performance, and achievements.
Conclusion
Happiness and getting the required skills are the goals of every employee in the workplace. It is the aim of every employee to be happy while working and to love what he does to earn a living. However, to attain happiness, it is advisable for employees to follow the steps that this study outlines. This action will improve employee productivity, increasing the firm’s competitive advantage in the market.
