The United States of America was founded on the belief that everyone has the same basic human rights such as the freedoms of speech and religion which they were denied in England thus forcing them to leave and settle in the New World. While this all sounds just and fair, the fact remains, however, that not everyone was treated equally instead it was the white man who had all the power and decided what was best for the colonies. Everyone else (i.e. women, slaves, and Native Americans) was considered lesser than as they were denied not only the right to vote but to be considered US citizens as well. This ideology was founded on the theory that God deemed white man the superior race which made them the ideal choice in deciding what was best thus giving them the justification for utilizing slavery as a source of economic dependence and for massacring Natives or as the colonists called them “savages”.
Although it would take a couple centuries and a civil war, this philosophy would adapt to include minority groups as human beings who deserve the same basic rights as white males. This change from centuries of white supremacy thinking would prove to be slow as the nation moved into the 20th century. In fact, it would take both the Suffrage Movement and the Civil Rights Movement for women and African Americans to finally obtain the right to vote which they should have possessed from the beginning. What’s more is that even after minority groups obtained this basic right, there are still those who see them as lesser which is making it difficult for America to progress even further.
Not only that but those minority groups now include homosexuals and Hispanics who are also being denied intrinsic rights such as being able to marry the person they love. Thus making it clear that while the US has progressed in their ideology in some ways, they are lagging in others as a current presidential candidate demonstrates through the suggestion of building a wall and punishing people who are just trying to live peacefully because of their race and beliefs.
