The spread of Islam was due to it being more than just a religion. Islam had everything that many religions overlooked. Islam was a way of life. It dictated laws for almost every aspect of society, and it was a culture to many. While religions such as Christianity had sought to destroy cultures that were deemed unholy and replace it with Christian culture, Islam did not initially try to destroy cultures. On the contrary, Islam wanted to enhance the good in a culture while eliminated the bad. For example, Islam made it wrong for families to bury alive or kill their daughters by elevating the status of females. It was the cultural aspect of Islam that made it appealing to people.
Apart from elevating the status of women, Islam had also improved other aspect of culture. It preached equality among humans despite their race, sex, religion, or social status. Islam also had the concept of an afterlife that offered rewards and gave individual accountability to everyone with no regard to his or her status in life. Additionally, the cultural climate was conducive to the spread of Islam due to so many people sharing similar culture in the region. Many people began to see the positive reaction Islam had on their community such as preventing war between Muslims.
5. What were the roles of Roman and Greek Christianity in early medieval Europe? How did they influence and shape societies? What were their principle channels of influence?
During the early medieval period in Europe, the Roman and Greek Church controlled everything. The Christian churches were landowners, lawmakers, and tax collectors. European monarchies and nobility were also governed by Roman and Greek churches. Anyone who opposed the Christian church or spoken negatively about its activities was excommunicated. That met there were unable to attend church, receive communion, and in some instances, unable to have a Christian burial.
Roman and Greek Christianity influenced and shaped societies in many ways. Since the clergymen were the only one who can read in many communities, many of the art from medieval Europe was based on religious stories. Churches were built according to spiritual inspirations. Additionally, religion was the center of everyday life during medieval times. In Europe, churches became the center for learning, hospitals, and travel lounges.
Roman and Greek Christianity’s principle channels of influence were through the use of the laws. Throughout the early medieval period, religion rule over society. Since many of the clergymen were men of knowledge, most often, religious people held many positions of power. Religion was so powerful that there were times when the Church overruled monarchies. The reason Christianity was so influential during the medieval period was that people believed religion was the only way to salvation. If a person disbelieved, went against the Church teachings, or spoken out negatively against the church, he or she could have been excommunicated. That met they would no longer be able to participate in Church activities and may never gain salvation.
