Human Resource Management - Question for Review
Dr. Edward Deming held a strong opinion that performance reviews only nourish/improve short-term performance and demolishes teamwork because every employee emphasizes the achievement of individual targets instead of group oriented pursuits. Such a short-term orientation fails to improve long-term performance and encourages the environment of corporate politics as every employee is concerned about his/her targets only . In such an environment, employees are rewarded only on the basis of what they have achieved rather than what they have contributed to the system of continuous improvement.
Personnel driven by such an environment tend to care more about the achievement of monthly targets. They never tend to have a longer term perspective to improve their skill set and contribute positively to the system. In other words, performance reviews annihilate long-term planning as individuals are concerned about target achievement instead of system improvement. Apart from this, when individuals are rewarded and valued only on the basis of their achievements, instead of contributions, they fear that if they fail to meet targets, they are more likely to be laid-off .
With this fear in mind, employees discourage teamwork and focus on individual achievements for which they may go to extreme. In such situation, politics and rivalry among members of the same organization becomes intensified. Teamwork and cooperation cease to exist in the corporate environment. None of the employees and managers helps and supports one another in the event any unforeseen issue arises. Instead of creating value, everyone employee becomes tempted to achieve individual goals to keep the job that threatens the whole continuous improvement system (Nankervis et al., 2014, p.333).
