A tried gunfire case took place at a Western psychiatric hospital in the United States. This mass shooting was carried out by a 30-year old man who was expected to have severe psychological disease, somatic misapprehensions and extraordinary access to medical experts. During the attack, six people were shot where one died on the spot. The police killed the shooter. Information about the shooting was gathered from media accounts and court documents. The shooters interaction with health care officers, psychiatric history, and his communication before the firing suggested an occasional type of mass killing. This is an accidental attack by a delusional and psychotic individual with sorrow from somatic illusions. The shooter planned the shooting despite him being psychotic. He had made a direct threat of such an attack one month before the shooting occurred. This case signified the healthcare system which needs to be equipped with equipment to handle severe mental diseases.
Being an associate professor of medicine at UCLAs David Geffen School of Medicine and UCLAs school public health where he teaches decision analysis, John Shick wrote him a letter telling him that physicians at Pittsburgh medical center had refused to treat him, and they had held him at gunpoint. He seemed to be delusional and paranoid in his letter which made professor know that something was wrong. This made the professor alert the UPMCs western psychiatric institute and clinic through a letter warning them of harm. After twelve days, UPMC was attacked which led to the death of one and others were injured. This made professor be involved in this mass shooting.
Dr. Spiegel says that human beings are threat detectors by nature. A person can sense danger or harm before it happens. One can study one's behavior such as facial behavior, the way he talks, movements, humility, etc. feel if an imminent threat may be caused or not. He says that this threat detectors are inborn and are outstanding at discerning harm. He says a human being has a strong instincts.
According to this story, the cause of this specific mass shooting was due to the failure of relevant people and authorities to act when Shick started to show some strange character traits. Dr. Spiegel claims that the police, administrators, social workers, students, doctors, crisis counselors, etc. all had information of impending attack by Shick but they never acted to stop it. He says that all these groups of people had a role to play to end this mass killing. He claims that the entire system fails because it did not work as a network at first. Most medical experts who met Mr. Shick knew that he had unusual complaints about them and he had threatening characters, but they failed to take action to combat such an incident. They lacked a distinct, central scheme to report this issue and their concerns. Experts claim that it was difficult to choose a particular person from a mass of many individuals who is a potential mass shooter. They argue that any individual may be inaccurate when it comes to selecting an individual who is capable of causing harm to others.
Dr. Spiegel seemed to be a knowledgeable person on criminology. He has good critical thinking and problem-solving tactics. He has a methodical approach to crimes. He considers step by step method to crime investigation. He is a team worker. He says crime investigation should be done as a team work. He has vast knowledge of the law. Investigators must know the law surrounding criminal cases like a mass shooting. He also has a logical and deductive mindset which he uses to gather data from the scene and is able to reconstruct crime commission using logical thinking. He also has good communication skills as he give thorough details of the incident which can be used to compile a report.
Most mass shooters are motivated by revenge that makes them decide to kill. For example, chick decided to carry out the attack because the doctors had failed to treat him. Also, mass shooters show risk character traits that are tied to criminal activities such as being abusive, lack of compassion; his lifestyle may relate to a particularly known killer indicated through hairstyle, dressing code, he talks, etc. They also tend to harbor anger and paranoid illusions. They also have low self-confidence and mostly move around with people who are outcasts from the society. They also tend to be obsessed with violent actions and guns threats.
Dr. Spiegel says that analysis of potential shooter needs to be done appropriately to avoid misjudging wrong people. He says that a narrow or needle detector is required for crowd-sleuthing of criminal activities. Several sources are needed to detect an impending violence. He says that this needle analysis of potential shooters should be done as a group. Before settling on the final decision that a person is a potential killer, several diagnostic pathways should have a positive result. He says that diagnosis of the behavior of the person needs to be thoroughly done. The way a person speaks or expresses delusional thinking, an alarm of a potential threat should be raised. Mostly these strange characters are detected by friends and relative who should hesitate and report that case to someone who can help the police, doctor, local psychiatric, etc.
All potential mass shooters should be detected, and relevant actions taken against them. Empowering and Prioritization of research to evaluate how crowd-sleuth can be efficiently done to the public. An efficient, connected crowd- sleuthing network should be used to identify potential criminals. This network should include relatives, parents, security officers, doctors, etc. Empowering of sufficient free-flowing communication among those involved parties and organizations should be enhanced for effective control of criminal activities. Also, all those involved should work as a team so that better results can be achieved.
Better ways of combating potential killers should be implemented to detect and prevent violence instead of lamenting that it was difficult to identify threats.I am personally against and condemn this incident. I propose that proper measure should have been taken before this incident occurred to protect the lives of those injured and killed. I also see the failure of those who were responsible for taking action. This article has enlightened me about how people should react when a potential shooter is noted.
There seems to be no solution to mass killers who do their horrific and tragic acts using guns. I suppose that the only solution is that suck killers should be incarcerated involuntary as a measure to combat such acts. The issue on gun control has to be discussed extensively as there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of mass shootings. Gun control laws should be more stringent to avoid such case scenarios as the attacker had easy access to a gun despite being in a state of mind that did not warrant the use of a firearm. Firearms have to be made less available to individuals with mental cases as the possibility of misuse is critically high. Individuals with incidents of mental disorder should be closely monitored. Complacency to monitor such individuals has far reaching consequences and the appropriate authority should bear the brunt of such actions. Networks should be placed among the various authorities to track and deal with such case scenarios when the threat of them happening is apparent as well as ensuring the coordination of authorities to deal with such scenarios. The legislation on gun controls has become a matter of necessity as legislation should be amended despite widespread criticism to change current gun laws.
