The mobile technology today is such an integral part of our life that it is almost impossible to image the modern world without it. Initially, it was designed only to connect people with the cellular connection and evolved to the point when the majority of our everyday tasks can be performed with a use of it. For example, ordering food, looking for the car nearby, checking the schedule of the communal transport, looking up information, updating day schedule, exchanging emails and messages, listenings to the music, watching videos and, of course, making calls.
Unfortunately, because of that, most people do not really realize that this technology is not that harmless as it seems to be. The concept of the “progress trap” has been introduced by scientists in order to show that some technologies, despite their promising upbringing, actually can lead to the serious problems in the future due to the fact, that risks were not evaluated properly and not managed in a right way.
It has been mentioned various times over the past years, that there is a major shift in a way how people communicate today with each other. Mobile technology creates obstacles to the real-life communication and it can be obviously seen when the company of friends are more occupied with the virtual worlds in their phones and keep ignoring each other, even though actual communication was the main reason for getting together. Psychologists claim that we become more distant from each other because of the constant availability to get access to anyone in the world, and cannot appreciate a moment that is shared with another person right now.
If to compare the rules of business etiquette, we can see that they have dramatically changed since smartphones came into our lives. For example, at this point it is almost rude to call without a prior notice, it is always better to send a message first. Actually, this can be the reaction to the situation, when every person was extremely available for the contact by, basically anyone else in the word. Right now we are trying to be in charge of the situation and clearly state when it is a convenient time for us to be contacted and not stop the constant intrusion into our private lives.
It is worth mentioning, that mobile technology significantly changed and now include various other technologies that were incorporated such as Bluetooth, wifi, GPS tracking, mobile internet etc. That is why all the issues connected to those technologies are concerning the users of mobile technology as well.
One of the most prominent issues of our times in regards to the mobile technologies is the privacy issue. Mobile applications require a lot of access to private data and, usually, users are not conscious or educated enough to understand to which information they grant access. For example, one of the recent examples is the situation that has been described by the former employee of the company Uber. Apparently is was very common to track all the movements of the users of this application, especially if employees very looking up information about the celebrities or their current or ex partners. This basically was an unauthorized surveillance and the users gave the access to this type of data to the company on their own.
Another harmful effect brought by the mobile technologies is the environmental one. Today companies produce billions of the new mobile phones every year in the desire to update the hardware and become more competitive on the market. The level of the sales in the mobile industry is constantly high. Unfortunately, the issue of correct disposal of the used mobile phones is still the one that needs an answer. The amount of the electronic garbage accumulated by the human population is as high as never, and the toxic imprint on nature cannot be overrated.
What is important to understand that even if technology can potentially lead to very serious and dangerous consequences, it is still just a tool that is used in order to achieve some specific goal. None of the existing successful technologies were designed to be perfect from the first moment of their creation. Even the light bulb come a long way in order to become more efficient in use, require fewer resources and harm the environment in a lesser way. Mobile technology has significantly evolved since this concept has been presented to the public and despite all the harmful effects helped to save many lives and make everyday routines more simple and affordable to the average people.
