I handled Viola’s case first. She is an artist with a website from where she sells her artwork. She also works as a librarian and sells her art from the library. She wants to claim some tax expense from the sale of her artwork. She intends to deduct the truck rental, office supply, and website management expense, amounting to $2,000. She was surprised when I asked for receipts for the above expenses. I knew she misunderstood me when she looked at me suspiciously and asked why I wanted such a proof. I had to explain to her that I was only helping her to prepare the tax returns for her. I further explained to her that she would, however, be in trouble during an IRS audit, in case she was not able to provide them with receipts for the expenses claimed on her tax returns. She finally let her guard down after hearing my explanation and asked if she could come back later with the documents instead of waiting in line.
My second case was a single mother who has Breast Cancer, and her community hospital provides free medical services for her. This was my first time to come across such a situation and I was not sure of what to do because technically speaking; I would have thought she has a health insurance but at the same time, my fear is; one place cannot be enough to qualify for Minimum Essential Coverage. I wanted to be sure that I was making the right decision that would benefit both of us, and so I asked for the site manager’s help. The result was disappointing as my fear was confirmed; the free service from the local hospital does not qualify as Minimum Essential Coverage because a taxpayer can only get medical service in one place. I felt sorry for her, but still, I had to charge the ‘health insurance penalty’ on her return to save her from a bigger trouble in the future.
