‘Love’ is among the majorly debated themes by both the modern and postmodern poets. Fundamentally, love refers to a deep affection for something towards another thing. The poems “A&P” by John Updike, “Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, “a leaf falls” by E.E. Cummings and When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" by Walt Whitman vividly provides a depiction of love, as some of the major thematic issues. This paper, therefore, provides an analysis and the discussion of ‘” love” as one of the major thematic issues portrayed in “A&P”, “Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord “a leaf falls” and When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer".
As depicted in A&P, John Updike portrays his poem as a humorous adventure story whereby the young protagonist behaves in the name of the romantic love and ultimately pays the price. In this sense, Updike tries to make the optimistic reader feel that the story’s sensitive champion is relieved from a dangerous end job and significant restriction from a moral legislations. Sammy belongs neither to is parent’s world, nor to the world of other girls. However, his actions do not take him from one world to another, but he finds himself stationed between the two. In the same way, depict girls walk into the A&P to allure every man in the store. Sexuality, therefore, provides them with power over the masculinity. The strategies laid by females in this sense operates well based on the fact that even the males show interests towards them.
In the “poem Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord” Gerald Hopkins attempts to portray the man speaking as begging for answers from God, particularly during the adverse times. Ideally, the persona seems to be struggling to remain a good person and obedient to God. The events he passes through prompts him to ask God why the sinners prosper and succeed in life but with him, he continuous to face considerable disappointment despite being good to God. At this point, the “God’s love for sinners” emerges as a major theme. Ideally, the God’s way will always lead one to the right direction, but human beings will also need to be determined without losing hope. From another perspective, the God loves sinners and will never forsake them no matter what actions they do.
The theme of love also forms a greater portion of the poem “A leaf fall”. Described as one the haiku-like poems that Cummings has ever created, the poet depicts the theme of love for self, embedded in the poem’s major theme “loneliness”. Consisting of only four words, the poem portrays a leaf fall as the description of an autumn, which may encompass both the spiritual and physical isolation. A further scrutiny of a leaf fall reveals a feeling of loneliness that supersede an individual upon watching a single leaf falling. A single leaf in this manner reflects a man’s death, which is an individual’s own business. The love for oneself, therefore, makes people view other person’s challenges as a lonely business.
Lastly, the poem “When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer” is seen to express a romantic theme significantly. In this case, the beauty, mystery and the universe’s grandeur are not able to be handled intellectually if not spiritually. Through a dedicated personalised and individualised adventure, the meaning and authentic portrayal are obtained. Whitman tries to urge people to explore their passions, love and desire based on their voices and actions. In his word, Whitman believes that demonstration of both the success and competency in whatever in the manner an individual act is not adequate but love for oneself is necessary. People have to find and gather their individualised voices in the process of endeavouring to become the success.
In conclusion, it is evident that these literary works effectively portray love as one of the major thematic issues in them. While it is noticeable that the poets discussed in this paper may have succeeded in demonstrating the theme directly, others have incorporated it as a subtheme other major themes. Overall, love, as a thematic issue in these works portray the desire that people have to themselves, and other people, in addition to themselves.
