Poverty in economic terms is often the lack of material goods, money and the ability to afford basic necessities such as housing, food and electricity. In certain cases, poverty is down to the personal choices and decision-making of the individual. And in the fight against poverty, an individual has many different roles to play (although in certain cases it can be beyond the individual to come out of poverty). Educational choices, lifestyle changes, a different employment are some of the areas where an individual can make changes in the fight against poverty. The people with money can also change their consumption patterns that would help alleviate or change the economic status of the poor. They could also donate more.
Apart form the individual, social variables such as class, race and gender also impact the poverty rates. The poverty rate among African Americans and Latino population is more widespread compared to the rest of the Americans and this has a lot to do with race as well as class. The country came out of institutional racism only a few decades ago. Racism at all levels had curtailed the growth of a certain section of people both economically and politically. Unemployment and unskilled work are also high among these groups because of long held discriminatory educational practices. The remnants of which can still be seen today. Having parents who had opportunities, money and established contacts, children of rich parents can make it big easily compared to other children with parents from a lower social class. Women, especially single women with kids also are more likely to be poor when they hold on to unskilled jobs and take care of their kids without benefits or help from the state. Usually they hold down multiple jobs just to scrape by every month.
