Throughout life, there are many experiences that one must face. Many of these come from relating to other human beings, something that may be very difficult. Often, people face dilemmas that are related to differences between the ideal way that things should be, and how they actually are in reality.
In the Devil’s Den case, Susan is faced with such a dilemma. She discovers that a place that she works at has many problems, including several illegal activities. Even though she would be morally compelled to decry such actions, she would like to be promoted to student manager, something that she believes would be affected if she were to blow the whistle on these disfavorable actions.
Besides the obvious problems that having difficulties with one’s coworkers may bring, the student managers are the ones that pick the employees. This means that she would probably not be promoted if she were to upset them. Therefore, the dilemma is between publicizing these illegal events, something that would be of communal interest, and the individual ambition of being promoted within her company and having an adequate workplace atmosphere.
Susan identified two main problems in the night shift operations of the Devil’s Den. The first of these was theft, as people were giving away free products to their friends and other customers. Furthermore, they were not held accountable for this by the supervisors.
As such, the problem in this company was not only with the staff, but with the leaders as well. The management team does not seems to sucesfully perform many necessary strategy execution processes, including shaping the work culture, instituting policies and procedures and controlling the workers. This allowed the problems with the subordinates to flourish, not being controlled by proper actions from those that were supposed to be supervising them.
The employees were allowed to do as they liked; due to discontent with the job, they sabotaged the organization, something that they evidently believed to be just, but that was actually illegal. The lack of policy implementation and control habilitated this, and the workers continued behaving in this reproachable manner. This has led to a lacking display of ethics on their behalf, that their subordinates have taken advantage of and emulated.
It would seem that the difference between Susan and the other employees at Devil’s Den would be their commitment towards ethical behavior. Susan does not steal from the company even if she is unsatisfied with her position because she believes that it would be incorrect to do so. Her perception is that it is immoral and even illegal to steal, so giving out the company’s products for free not only hurts the company, but is morally reprehensible as well.
This is in obvious contrast to what the rest of the staff believes, as they do not have such a clear moral standing. In this sense, their perceptions are skewed by what they deem to be injustices in the workplace, something that they seek to amend by hurting the employer. In this sense, they act out of vengeance or rage, because they do not have the ethical filter that Susan does. Their behavior are influenced by what they understand to be a wrongdoing on behalf of the employers, and their lack of respect towards morality and the law.
As always, the most difficult aspect of dilemmas is choosing what to do when one is confronted with them. In this sense, there are many actions that she could take. The choice she has to make should be informed not only by the actual situation, but taking into consideration her personal desires as well.
If there were no way of doing this, she could attempt to speak to the day shift manager, who may not be aware of the situation and appears more professional. He or she could advise her, or talk to College Food Services himself. As he does not depend on the approval of his peers, and it is within his job description to control this, he could do this with less of a negative impact than Susan might. Furthermore, it is obvious that this is something that would worry him, as it does not seem to happen on his shift.
