Human Resource Management is a dynamic field that has to navigate through the ever evolving and changing markets. The difficulty is paring employee to customer making a successful transaction. This relationship between employees and customers is essential. While customer needs and interactions change so do the needs of the HRM to locate, hire, and train the correct individuals to cooperate with the customer. There are many changes that are occurring with the digital age and globalization, HRM’s are sensitive to these trends and are shifting their function in their companies. In the society for industrial and organizational psychology the article Karen May cited several activities that HRM’s roles are changing. The largest that can be seen is how they view their employees. (May, 1998) While the role of the HRM remains the same in the need to find, hire, and train the right candidates, their goal and process have transformed. They search for the ability to add value to the company in looking ahead for individuals who will grow with the company providing stable patterns for growth and flexibility in the market.
The HRM’s shift their process by being more hands on in leadership roles, working with management, and making new ongoing training systems to improve the ability to have employees cross trained or have the employee move to different roles needed within the company. This provides flexibility and great stability for the company overall. (May, 1998). This is an extension the theory on Ulrich’s model of HRM “The Business Partner Model.” Making the HRM an integrated member within the company working with the departments as a partner to provide the needed service and staff to produce the needed attributes from the personnel. (Ulrich, 2008) This renders strength and real value to the HRM dept., as well as organization. (May, 1998)
