The summary of ‘America can be a full-employment economy once again’ article
The article focuses on the lack of full employment among the people in the United States as the main cause of poverty. It shows the connection between employment and the economy. When the levels of unemployment are too high, the economy becomes poor because the purchasing power of the people is low. Some factors that have led firms to hire few employees include high rates of taxation and unfavorable government policies. According to the article, the labor market has reduced the number of employees, which has created a big challenge because individuals need jobs to earn a living (Komlos 1). Therefore, when the unemployment rates are high the quality of life is reduced. The problem can be solved by creating a full employment and changing the labor market strategies and functioning.
Thoughts on ‘Four Myths about Poverty’ article
The article brings out four primary myths and arguments about poverty among people. The first argument is that it is not easy to eliminate poverty because measures to eliminate it have been put in place but the rates of poverty are still high. It is said to be immutable since the government policies and strategies to eliminate poverty have not been successful. The second argument is that poverty emanates from the poor and competitive economy. Therefore, there is the need to come up with a good economy in terms of the labor market, taxes and government policies to eliminate poverty. Poverty prevents the poor from competing with the rich because they do not get good education that can help them compete for jobs in the market. There is also high unemployment rates because of the poor economy. The third argument is about full employment among people (Tierney 1). It exists when all available resources are fully utilized. The last myth is that poverty is complicated. It is hard to establish the causes and provide solutions that will fight poverty among the people fully. There is still more research that needs to be done on the topic.
