Literature
Anzia Yezierska draws Hanneh Hayyeh in a way that makes readers to sympathize with her. Hanneh is a lower class lady who works for Mrs. Preston. She owns nothing that she can really attribute to herself. More so, Preston discriminates her and does not want to treat her in decent manner although she has the ability to do so. This also makes me to dislike Mrs. Preston since she lacks the sense of humanity though she is not fully heartless. She does not view Hanneh as her equal simply because Hanney is poor. A writer can use strong characters that should take after real characters to add appeal to the work. Also, the story created should deal with things that happen in the real world so that it may appear familiar to the audience. Mrs. Preston feels that it is not her responsibility to change the poor condition of Hanney (Yezierska 1997). Today, this is common. The rich fail to help the poor so as deliver them from their poor conditions. This demonstrates epiphany.
Langston Hughes. Let America Be America Again
James Langston Hughes was born on 1st February 1902 in Missouri. He was a great poet, playwright, novelist and social activist. He died on 22nd May 1967 having written several works (Hughes 2004).
The poem was easy to understand since Hughes uses short, simple and clear lines. I interpreted that Hughes was pleading for America to be a good place to live in. however, it has never been a good place to him. Hughes tries to urge the American leadership to treat all people equally and stop discriminating some groups such as the Negros. Bibliographical information shows that America is not the America that it is used to be hence it needs to reform.
Elaine Sexton. Public Transportation
Elaine Sexton was born on 17th September 1951 in Lanstuhl, Germany. She grew up in New Hampshire and most of her works are poems. She graduated from Hampshire University and holds an M.F.A from Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in New York (Sexton 2012) .
The poem is easy to understand. It requires a poetic eye since the poet uses technical lines. The poet tells us how she meets several people whose personalities are totally different from what they look to be from the surface. The idea that the poet conveys is that in life one will meet many different people. The people may seem helpless or useless but in real sense they have high abilities. We should therefore not judge people by their looks since looks are deceiving. The bibliographical information deepens the understanding of the poem by showing that it is about the public.
