After his nocturnal adventure in the forest, Goodman Brown started to view society as divided into good and bad. He realizes that each and every human being faces and experiences temptations and has an inclination to jump to conclusions about others with no adequate proof. It can be said that his adventure made Goodman Brown see both the darker and brighter sides of life. The mentioned experience makes him understand that an individual’s morality is impacted in a particular way by beauty and ugliness and the same is applicable for the society. Nathaniel Hawthorne has shown how the adventure at forest helped Goodman Brown discover his real self by taking a sentimental ride. He is also shown to discover the impiety and immoral behaviors of the human beings (society).
Young Goodman Brown also learns about love, hatred, darkness, light, good and wickedness and how these characteristics influenced him as an individual. He is shown to comprehend the idea that ignorance must not always be considered a bliss as it leaves a person “in the heart of the dark wilderness, still rushing onward, with the instinct that guides mortal man to evil” (Hawthorne 237). This short story is a brilliant write as the character of Goodman Brown also helps the reader find out the principles of self-discovery, conscientiousness and relationship with the society and nature. The adventure at the forest made Brown realize and decipher the real meaning of life and all the essential ingredients that make it worthwhile. Goodman Brown learns that the beauty of one’s life lies in his own hands and it totally depends on the person how he/she lives with goodness and morality.
