What I Hope to Gain from My College Education
I strongly believe that college education will prepare me to undertake the role and responsibilities of the position of a nurse which matches my career choice, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The course curriculum ensured that the course modules that I would enroll in are replete with theories and concepts in nursing which are needed for the profession. I recognized that in almost all programs or degrees, the first two years of tertiary education require students to enroll in general education courses. For this degree course, the course modules focus on specialized nursing courses which would enhance my knowledge in the delivery of high quality patient care. As such, I affirm that these subject present advanced theories which would assist in providing health care to patients in the most appropriate manner. The applications for requiring comprehending various discourses in health care would improve my skills in providing the appropriate interventions. I hope to prevent incidences of medication error, as well as to gain more skills in primary care. The instructional approach of providing students with health care projects in different course modules enable us to develop analytical skills, as well as proficiency in direct patient care in the safest and highest quality to abide by the standards expected of the nursing profession. More importantly, nursing courses require linking theories to practical applications through assuming a proactive stance in looking beyond the traditional classroom setting and seeing ourselves working in our respective health care environments.
Concurrently, aside from the skills set mentioned above, I hope to gain specialized skills that focus on direct patient care. I wanted to be more equipped with people skills, focusing on the development of interpersonal skills, customer relationship skills, effective communication (both verbal and non-verbal cues and modes), as well as cultural diversity awareness and competency. In an increasingly global world, I affirm that there is a need for higher education to include course modules that recognize and respect cultural diversity, as well as adherence to universal standards of ethics and morality. In addition, since most of the applications in the real world setting utilize technology, advanced knowledge in accessing and using databases, as well as encoding, updating, managing personal, professional and organizational files need to be clearly understood. This is most needed especially in the use of electronic health records in the health institutions that require its application.
Through the advanced knowledge and skills that are hoped to be gained in this nursing degree, I am confident that when I graduate, I would be fully equipped with the essential ingredients for a productive career. I am sure that, although the work experience would be challenging, the theories and concepts learned, in conjunction with the skills set developed, would enable me to apply what is needed in future health care settings. I look forward to sharing the knowledge, skills, and abilities that I gain in the nursing degree to assist others in recognizing and acknowledging my capabilities to accomplish identified objectives. My college education would be the most instrumental contributor to the fulfillment of my personal and professional goals to become a highly qualified and competent nurse.
