Things Fall Apart was written by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe and was published in 1958. The title foreshadows the tragedy in the novel. Achebe borrows the title from W B Yeats’ poem The Second Coming: ‘Things fall apart and the center cannot hold’. The phrase things fall apart is used to show the images of more general chaos that follows in the novel. The second phrase is a kind of declaration that “the centre cannot hold,” It is relevant to Achebe’s novel as the traditional structure of the society is challenged by the coming of missionaries and the white ...

Summary and response paper to The Prodigal God Book
Almost everybody has the knowledge and is well conversant with the story in the bible about the prodigal son.it was a parable given out by Jesus. Quite a number of people have got comfort in the parables moral that is about the free forgiveness granted to the repentant prodigals. The prodigals had consumed their lives with misuse living. But, we could ask ourselves if that is the whole point of that story. Keller in his book argues that Jesus’ parable as he sees it is more properly a tale of two sons who are lost, the loving father providing a prodigal grace. The ...

But I have that within which passes show,
These but the trappings and the suits of woe. (I.ii)

His emotional outbursts and strange comments have everyone around him believing he has gone crazy and that the ghost ...

Doubt can never be compared with certainty in terms of providing a sense of community powerful as faith. A community in doubt is a divided community sine people live with mistrust and cannot tell what they expect of that community. As a single mother, I have never trusted any man who claims that he can take care of me and my child. It is not easy to trust a man anymore after what I have learnt from my married friends and how their husbands are unfaithful. This doubt creates mistrust a and poor social bonds between me and men within the society.

The short story by Lorrie Moore named “Birds of America” is written in English but at times the use of language makes reading the story difficult. The subtitle of the story, for example, is “People like that are the only people here: Canonical babbling in Peed Onk.” Peed Onk is short for Pediatric Oncology Department. (224) When the Mother and Father talk to each other they can seem to be speaking in a shared secret language. On the other hand the way the author uses words to balance the tragedy with lightness made a big impression on me.

“When we read Dickenswe are reading all sorts of other things at the same time—plot, character, moral dilemma, historical predicament, and so forth—but we can see all these in their full complexity only if we attend to the illuminating play of style” (Alter 1996). Indeed, Charles Dickens is a master of style and a versatile genius. He weaves magic with his words that takes the readers into a rapturous world of imagination. The power of his words and imagination manifested in his depiction of simple stories and building of characters make him one of the most popular English novelists of ...

A poem by Theodore Roethke ‘My Papa’s Waltz’ is a representative of postwar lyrics. It describes father and son relationships, narrated retrospectively from the point of view of an adult, who used to be a participant of the action.
A question whether the poem pictures violence towards the child or on the contrary presents us warm relations between a youngster and a grown-up remains arguable. The author shows the act as a beautiful, graceful dance – the waltz. This fact directs us to the idea that for the narrator this experience was not horrible at all. He does not try to idealize his ...
Born in a poor family in Canada, Saul Bellow uses the experiences in his early life to develop his novel the ‘seize the day’. Analysis: Out of the Dust
Abstract
Karen Hesse's book Out of the Dust takes an unconventional approach to fiction, depicting the events of a full-length novel in a number of free verse poems. The tale of a family of farmers attempting to survive the Dust Bowl, Hesse's work is fascinating in its minimalism and heartbreaking in its focus. Hesse's free verse prose lends a childlike sense of simplicity and wonder to these heavy themes, showing just how dramatic these conditions can affect a child of that age; the result is an intelligent and thoughtful book on life in the Dust Bowl.
Karen Hesse's book Out of the ...
Death is the expression of life. It has a double sense and a double meaning in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. The funeral ceremony, mourning, revenging, talking with ghosts or committing suicidal acts represent passages in the circularity of life, based on various cultural or religious beliefs.
The Christian tradition implies a funeral ceremony for the dead people. Hamlet’s father did not benefit of such a ceremony after he was murdered by his brother, Claudius, who later took his throne and his wife. Nevertheless, prince Hamlet is permanently mourning him through his acts, through his perceived madness, illusory estate, and mixed thoughts: revenging ...
"My Papa's Waltz" - Literary Analysis
In Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz," the complex relationship between a father and son is communicated expertly through evocative imagery, steady rhythm and clear emotion. The specific nature of the boy's relationship with his father is a complex dichotomy between love and victimization, as the father is shown to be clearly alcoholic and abusive, both to his son and to his mother. Through the help of the aforementioned imagery and escalation of each stanza, Roethke makes clear the overall message of the poem, subtly alluding to the father's alcoholism, which is taken at face ...

Franz Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis no so long after he had finished writing The Judgment. It must be noted that the two stories have a lot in common. After reading The Metamorphosis if a look is taken into the biographical and historical context of Kafka, it can be argued that this story that the author published in 1912 expresses not only his own sense of self-alienation but other various other aspects of his life. Like Kafka, the main character of the novel, Gregor Samsa is a German Jew living in seriously anti-Semitic times. Samsa’s metamorphosis into an abominable insect can be ...

In 2001, John Irving was holding forth at a Q&A at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, and one of the questions had to do with the degree to which Irving’s fiction is autobiographical. After all, if you look at just about all of his novels, the main character has a father who is either completely absent, handicapped, or just incompetent; the setting includes a New England prep school, Toronto, or Vienna (or a combination of the three); the main character has an interest in wrestling; and the plot and themes of the novel have a connection to sexual boundaries. ...

Over the years, the analysis and critique of works of literature has adopted different dimensions. In simple terms, critics of literature works have adopted different approaches when it comes to analyzing and understanding these works. Some have chosen to explore individual elements within the work to detect a piece of literature is a classic or whether is poorly articulated. This has therefore resulted in varying opinions among different critics about the nature of certain literature pieces due to the lack of a standard approach or model of understanding literature. However, Vladimir Nabokov in his book “Good Readers and Good Writers” presents a unique ...
If we truly are masters of our own fates, then the actions that we take guide the course of our lives; in contrast, if we fail to take action, then our lives do not move forward. In order for a human being’s life to be harmonious, there must always be a delicate balance of thought and action that allows that person to make decisions wisely while at the same time keeping the urge to act on impulse too often at bay. However, if the scales tip to far in one way or another, then the results can be disastrous for ...

1) The advantage (and disadvantage) of graphic storytelling is that it is both a wonderful and sometimes confusing way of telling the story. In the case of "Two Questions," the way the text swirls around the images is quite interesting, as we get a much more kinetic and immersive way of seeing the world of the story. However, one of the disadvantages is being somewhat confused at times, as it takes awhile to get used to the format of the graphics. For a time, you may miss important parts of the story if you do not know where one image begins and ...
