The Italian drama “Rome, Open City” by Roberto Rossellini was shot in 1945. Being a perfect example of the Italian neorealism, the film is significant for its naturality. It depicts Rome during the World War II, with all its horror and cruelty. The story is told in chronological order. The film is black and white, with high-key lighting and mostly deep focus. The director of “Rome, Open City” uses normal lens, so the perspective is normal and the focal length is moderate. The film is shot by the objective camera, so that the spectator watches the action as the neutral ...

Personally, I do not think I am able to multi-task effectively although I used to think that I did. What looks like an efficient way of doing things is actually proving to be ineffective for me. For instance, I would do my assignments while Facebook and Twitter are on and on the side, I would also chat with friends who are online on Facebook. I do this while ...

This 2011 sports drama follows real-life coach Billy Beane (an entertaining Brad Pitt) who decides to take a different approach to assembling sports teams; unlike the old-school approach that divines players through straight play history, personality and likability, Beane consults Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) to come up with a new way to find good players - sabermetrics. The sabermetrics approach applied in the film is a way to objectively assess sports players and their records in baseball; with this, the only factors that matter are baseball statistics that analyze activity within baseball games. Instead of factoring in the subjective elements that many ...

2013 was the year that saw F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, “The Great Gatsby”, brought into cinema, for the second time. Whenever a great novel is adapted for the screen, many pedants will try to scrutinize the film to see if there is any nonconformity to the original. The book is often regarded and sacred as consequently; many films often fail to reach the pedestal set by the book. If the audience deems the film to be an effective adaption of the book, the movie will more often than not be successful. The Great Gatsby (2013) is the perfect ...
Movie Review: Examine the videos of Huang and Pattanaik through the eyes of globalization. Each of the presenters is making the argument that Western industrial development does not overwhelm culture, and that their 'lesser developed' countries have much to teach the West. - Medical Doctor Devdutt Pattanaik, in his presentation entitled: “East vs. West -- the myths that mystify,” shared his views about the difference between “the world” (logos) and “my world” (mythos). He gave mythological and real-world examples about objective and subjective truths. My personal stance is that I do not ...

In the past years, movies marked as “based on real events” appear more often. Moreover, some of the researchers, as well as ordinary viewers claim that almost every movie is based on real events. The point is that sometimes directors as well as screen play writers tend to exaggerate the importance and cruelty of some events. In the most cases, it happens in horror movies or some documentaries. The point is that the main idea of every documentary is to convince people in something. This essay is devoted to the issue of veracity of the events in three movies: ...
Budrus is definitely an inspiring and motivating movie that clearly demonstrates what people can really do under the influence of a leader that renounces violence and manages to unite people that in fact, had nothing to split. It is amazing and note-worthy how a need for fairness can become an entire movement that strives for just, in a world where barriers are built to keep people apart, be it Palestinians from Israelis, to black and white people, to Christian and Muslims and anything else in between.
Like any other documentary, the camera in Budrus has indeed been used to explore and ...

Personal Reflection
The movie was a real eye opener for me. Until I saw it, I never really understood what happened to cause the 2008 meltdown. I never understood what the big deal was about home mortgages. All I knew then was that the U.S. and the world were in a financial crisis.
The movie made me realize how complex and complicated it all was. It was quite surprising for me to learn that the fate of the American economy – probably even that of the world – lay in the hands of a few powerful men. I was especially struck by what Timothy Geithner told ...
One of the hallmarks of public life in the twenty-first century and especially since the rise of social media is in understanding how these developments have actively worked to change the way that not only people communicate with each other but how governments and institutions communicate with the people. The rise of social media technology has been largely concurrent with another very important change in the way that the world is organized; namely, globalization. Globalization as a process has for the most part been a force which has weakened the power of national governments, has created real constrictions on ...

It is the intention of the film to make a social analysis of the current times, based on the situation of a woman who is forced to sacrifice herself in doing extreme actions in order for them to survive with ...
Chinese cinema has always been at the forefront of international cinema. For André Bazin, the famous film critic and theorist from France, cinemas were a realist medium. This is why majority of film theorists would perhaps argue that that if he got a look at the computer-animated film WALL·E (2008) by Disney/Pixar, he would turn over in his grave. His theories revolved around the notion that there is always a mummy complex underlying the origin of any form of art, including cinema. Bazin’s notion suggests that art struggles to immortalize the mortal, to preserve the physical existence on screen. According to Bazin, the medium that eliminates most of the distance between ...

The Red Violin chronicles the long and exciting journey of the last violin made by a famous Italian instrument maker. The idea of the "best" violin hand-crafted by a master hundreds of years ago immediately made me think of Antonio Stradivari. A simple online search revealed that the film was indeed based on a Stradivarius violin called the Red Mendelssohn, which features a red stripe (as opposed to the blood varnish of the Red Violin) on its top right side (Fletcher, n.p.). What amazed me is that, both in real life and in the movie, people (often musicians) have the utmost desire to ...

‘Hope” is the beauty and the very essence of life. A day follows a night, every sunset is followed by sunrise, light at the end of the tunnel – you can ramble on and on so forth. Art in any form, be it a painting, a literary work or a movie is supposed to celebrate the gift of life and most of the time it does. Every fairy tale has a happy ending, a lovely piece of melody fills us with joy of living and a beautiful painting reminds us about the existence of God.
But novels and movies cannot always be preaching how good conquers ...
“What happens when wrong feels right and right feels wrong? When situations that appear to be black and white turn out to be gray?” (The Literary Analyst). The bygone philosophy of novelists writing what they desire stands firm. For me, a director holds the same status when it comes to films, in fact all artists irrespective of their desired form of art should have the liberty to think and make people do the same. This perfectly sounds true of Ben Affleck’s triumphant and remarkable debut in Gone Baby Gone (2007), which is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s heavily ...
The Coen Brothers have, one may say created an absolute masterpiece of a movie, which some may say is an amalgamation of the Wild West movies of old and a horror story. “The wide open plains, cowboys, Texas, guns and horses but has the syntax of a film noir even sometimes a horror movie. There is a murderer, one could even call him an unstoppable force, he kills without mercy and with a semi-novelty killing device. Since British slave owner Willie Lynch gave his speech on how to control slaves at the colony of Virginia in 1712, it seems like a lot has changed to improve for Black American citizens (Lynch ¶ 1). The Emancipation Proclamation officially abolished slavery in America, and the civil rights movement throughout the 20th century brought the right to vote, desegregation, America has its first Black President, and recognition of other rights for equality for Blacks fought for by the American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP, and other organizations focused on rights and opportunity. At the same time, it seems very little has ...
Movie Review: The Reader
The Reader, directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Ralph Fiennes as Michael Berg, David Kross as young Michael Berg, and Kate Winslet as Hanna Schmitz, is an unusual film because unlike most pieces that tackle the touchy subject of the Holocaust, it deals mostly with the lives of ordinary Germans at the time. Additionally, it brings the film into the modern day, showing the effects on German lives almost half a century after the time of the atrocities.
The movie’s form is that of a retrospect. It opens in Berlin in 1995 with Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes), a lawyer, admitting ...
