Indiana gained statehood in 1861 but important events have shaped its political and cultural identity. One of these was the NorthWest Ordinance (1787). At the time, Indiana was not yet part of the United States, and the Northwest Ordinance, provided an ambiguous foundation for states that sought statehood.
