Coretta Scott Smith James was born on April 27, 1927, in Heiberger, Alabama, the third of four children of Obadiah and Bernice Scott. Her family lived on a farm that it had owned since the end of the American Civil War, as Southern society transitioned from a slavery economy to an interaction of free people.
