Banking industry in Malaysia
The Malaysian banking industry can be traced back to the early 1900s during a period of rapid economic development mainly due to the increasing profits accrued from the rubber plantations and the tin industry. This resulted to the opening of branches of foreign banks in the country and the establishment of the first domestic bank in the country, Kwong Yik Banking Corporation during 1913, which is presently the Malaysian Banking Berhad (Alexander, 2007).
